Kjam, JasJar, or Messenger?

kjam.jpg Which phone is my favorite?

Over the last few months, I have had the opportunity to use some swell PocketPC phones. These phones are no longer "news" as they have been around a while now. I have used the HP HW6500, the iMate JasJar (aka HTC Universal), and the iMate Kjam (aka HTC Wizard). They all had some things I really liked, but in the end, I am in love with only one.

The HP HW6500 was easy to dislike after the way HP has jerked me around over the past year. I hate to have bias against a company, but HP really pissed me off over at iPaqHQ.com! I won’t go into details, but if we have any readers interested, ask or email me and I will detail my saga.

The iMate JasJar was a strong machine, but it was tri-band a more of a mini-tablet/laptop than a PocketPC phone. You can check out my review of this model here : LINK

The iMate KJam is the winner!
The Kjam has so much to offer:

  • Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition
  • Integrated 802.11g Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 2
  • 1.3-megapixel camera
  • Side slide-out keyboard
  • 128 MB ROM
  • 2.8-inch QVGA 240×320 display

This is no review, but I would like to point you to the best review online in my opinion that was written by a good friend of mine Matt Miller (aka Palmsolo).

The reasons I love this device:

  1. Durable - My wife dropped this phone in the toilet. It was totally submerged for 10-20 seconds and she brings it in almost in tears. I downplayed my being upset and said its ok. I then let it sit up 2 days to dry out, and to my surprise…. It’s alive again and in the last month I have had ZERO problems with it.
  2. Size - 2 years ago at an event called Mobile Focus, I told former Microsoft employee Jason Gordon that I would love a PocketPC phone somewhere between the size of a Dell Axim and a Smartphone. Well here we are… The iMate Kjam!

The reasons I don’t have the other two mentioned:

  • JasJar was a bit too bulky, was tri-band, and the was a overkill for my needs.
  • HP HW6500 was buggy (I did have a preproduction model, but…) and well, I just plain dislike HP at this time!

  1. Wow! Mrs. Leckneww may just have created a whole new testing standard!

Unfortunately, none of the carriers that have any reasonable coverage in my area offer the KJam - or JasJar, for that matter.

  2. Typos - my trademark. Really have to start using the Preview function!
