Five and seven megapixel camera phones?

As neat and handy as camera phones are, they have always been a little frustrating in my experience, due to crummy resolution. I would take photos only to find out that I couldn’t really do anything with them because they were so small. Enlarging the photos up was not an option because they looked even worse that way.
Now I know we have some better camera phones out there now, but nothing like what they have in Korea. Samsung and LG have been selling five megapixel phones in Korea for over a year, and have more recently come out with seven megapixel phones. It is rumored that eight megapixel phones will appear soon, maybe even later this month. Don’t look for them around the US anytime soon though!

This has been a vexation from my first “multi function” cell phone, a Motorola razr. Currently I have an HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125). And, although much better for pictures and video, it stinks. Reflecting over the years I have captured far more snapshots and video clips than phone calls.
Twice I really absolutely had to make a phone call. Once I was 90 miles out of town and the company car crapped out. The other time, some dicks set a truck bomb off in front of the Federal building downtown and caused the industrial convention nearby to be shutdown prematurely (no refunds to exhibitors).
Both of those events I was on the road with one of those very early Motorola flip phones about the size of a Gorilla fist with a two hour battery life. It made the emergency calls jus fine. But, there was no documentation of historic events. Not even crappy squidgy squint pictures.
So, spanning the decade plus time period? There have been some minor improvements. But, That improvement could have been fielded far more expediently.
Granted, the handset manufacturers are fettered by the carriers. This is without doubt in my mind. However, I would think there would be an opening that should the carrier reject a model features it would open the door wide for the manufacturers to offer it directly to the public. In the now sanctioned “Unlocked” condition.
It would be nice to have an HD camcorder with Gigabytes of SD storage and heart stopping stills and even be able to make that periodic emergency call or check email.
