OpenOffice.org Goes Mobile
Posted by Chris Leckness on 01/6/06 in Software
OpenOffice has served as the primary competitor to Microsoft Office for some time. It has similar features, supports (and was developed for) linux as well as OSX, and is FREE. Now they’ve added a mobile version that is about 130mb, designed to fit on a USB Drive. This should prove useful for those of us who never know whose computer we’ll end up on while on a trip and need to make sure we have the tools we need available. Check it out at OpenOffice.org (I bet that url was a shocker).

Ya know, i sat and poked around their site one whole afternoon. This really got my juices flowing, but i couldn’t bring myself to hit the download button. MS Office is so huge and i bet this is too. So does a person want TWO big office suite hogging valuable resources and would they conflict. I love Firefox but HAVE to keep IE around because some sites need it. Wish someone would comment on what you might sacrifice by switching to another open system (like no mail program yet).
No, you’re entirely correct, I don’t want two Office suites on my PC…that’s why I have $300 in my pocket and openoffice on my PCs.
But as far as browsers go, I have Opera, Firefox, and IE. Opera is numero uno for most stuff, Firefox for some extensions, IE when I absolutely have to. As far as mail programs go, check out Mozilla thunderbird, it’s very nice and free of course.
Well now I can have Openoffice, The Gimp and Firefox all on a USB key…so I can land on anyone elses computer and do most of what i want :)
Tobadly I cannot use this. They dont have the full support for some macros in Excel that I use and some of the other customizations used for work. Its a good basic office suite for standard users, but there is a reason why we buy Office and its not just because its Microsoft…
Also, there is no reason to bash IE, IE just does not work well if you go to those not so nice sites and/or if you are not protected properly. I have Trend Micro and have yet to have anything touch my machine :)
I’m not bashing IE, I’m just saying I stay away from it. I prefer to stick with good popup blocking and built-in RSS feeders. I never even had to worry about the WMF exploit, as it was only an issue with IE (provided you didn’t click ok in FF/Opera).
Personal Opinion, and Luckily we can all pick to use whatever we want :-)
