Day 2 with Nokia N70
Posted by Chris Leckness on 02/26/06 in Smart Phones
Well a little late on the posting of Day 2, but anyhow.
I did some more exploring of the Symbian OS and learned a few new tricks. It seems that it is simplistic, but you can customize it quite a bit through the use of putting things in folders and changing the layout. You also can change the 3×3 view to a list view if you prefer.
I have a few huge complaints though right now:
-
There is no easy to use keylock. On my T616 you can simply press the right key and then star to lock/unlock the keypad. It is very easy and it does not bug me to turn it on or off. Plus the T616 has an auto lock that it will turn on the keylock when it has been idle for X minutes. The N70 on the other hand requires you to press the power button on the top of the phone and then scroll down one item, finally pressing lock keypad to lock the keypad. The unlock luckily just requires a two button combination like the T616 does, but there is no auto KEY ONLY lock that I have found (there is an auto phone lock that requires a password), and it is annoying to have to press the power button each time to lock the phone.

For some reason Nokia found it a fun idea to put no Volume Up/Down keys on the phone. This is annoying as many times I find my self adjusting the volume on my phone and I am not a huge fan of profiles. But I guess you just have to get used to (or already like) the idea of profiles for when you go into meetings, etc. (on that note, in call volume can be adjusted with the D-Pad while in a call)
Today was sort of a rant on those two items, but I will be showing some of the more positive parts of the phone in the next few days. So make sure to check back!

To lock the keypad you just press the left softley and asterisk in standby mode. Easy!
You can lock/unlock by pressing left softkey + *.
Thanks for the tip guys. Interesting that it is not mentioned in any of the tutorials or the manual.
another tip is to push the power key and scroll up to find the lock keypad.
yup, that is the way I had been doing it :)
Press # for 2 secs to swap from general to silent mode
Press right softkey for few seconds when voice command active - speak out

Oddly, my N70 doesn’t let me do the `hold # for 2 secs to change profiles` trick. I have firmware v2.537.1.7. Is this relevant?
