Day 3 with Nokia N70: Signal Strength Comparison
Posted by Chris Leckness on 02/27/06 in Smart Phones
Today was a comparison of signal strength day with some of the other phones I have.
The main two phones that I compared to were the Motorola Razr V3 (Direct from Motorola) and the Sony Ericsson T616.
All of these phones are higher class phones (along with the T616) and all have been at the top of their Brand (Motorola, Sony, and Nokia Respectivly). The N70 is a newcomer for Nokia, but the way it is being marketed it is trying to be one of the top phones as well.
The thing I wanted to compare was the signal strength between these phones, and I had the perfect spot to check it out. At one of my family member’s house the signal is horrible and most phones will not get any reception. When you go into the basement, almost no phones will pick up a signal. So of course this is the perfect place to see just how good each of these phones are for signal strength. Also, just as a note, all phones were tested with the same SIM card so there is no difference what so ever in the cell service.
First up was the N70. When I first walked in and throughout most of the house I was able to get a poor-ok signal (2-3 bars of about 6). I was able to make calls fine and the GPRS connection worked but was very slow. When I walked into the basement all connection went away and I was not able to call or do anything. Then I walked upstairs again and was not able to rereceive a signal for quite sometime as it as looking for the signal. This still is pretty good performance overall though as most phones will not get any reception in the house at all.
Next was the T616. Inside the house I was able to retain about half signal without a problem and again outgoing calls and GPRS worked but was slow. Once I moved down into the basement I had a on and off connection that would come and go as it liked. This is a bit better than the N70 that lost signal completely, but still the T616 would…
drop calls and not keep a connection for an extended period of time. When I came back upstairs, the signal came back almost instantly and the T616 was much quicker to relock onto the signal.
Finally is the Razr V3. While this is a controversial phone as many have problems with it, being a model direct from Motorola that has the Original Motorola Firmware on it, my Razr tends to get very good signal and I have not had any of the known problems with it. This being said, throughout the whole house the signal was very strong with almost full bars on the scale. Walking into the basement the signal dropped to about 3 bars (out of 4 or 5) and I was still able to make and receive calls, plus get a decent GPRS connection. The Razr never once dropped signal and never once had any problems connecting.
So as far as ranking with Signal Quality of these phones, here is the order (1 Being Best)
-
Razr V3 (Original Moto Firmware)
-
Sony Ericsson T616 (Branded to ATT but used on the new Cingular)
-
Nokia N70 (Original Nokia Firmware)
Now, it make look bad that the Nokia is in 3rd (last out of these 3) place, but do not fear as these are all very amazing phones for signal strength. The N70 tends to get a very strong signal and is better than most phones for keeping signal. But if you live in a place where signal is always tough to come by, I would look at either the Razr V3 (best) or Sony T616 for Signal Strength.
A simple comparison for today, but more to come on the N70 in the next few days. So make sure to check back!
