Today Microsoft is announcing the release of Windows Vista Beta 2 and Windows Server “Longhorn” Beta 2, along with the release of 2007 Microsoft Office System Beta 2. This is a significant milestone in Microsoft’s history, as it is the first time we have released the beta versions of all three of the company’s flagship products simultaneously.

Microsoft’s enterprise customers will start experiencing Windows Vista Beta 2 today via the Customer Technology Preview (CTP) channels. In June they will also make the beta available for public download so that technology enthusiasts can take an early look at the product.

Beta 2 Messaging
As promised in March, we’re excited to announce that today we’re delivering on a major milestone in the development of Windows Vista with the release of Windows Vista beta 2.

• Beta 2 is available now to developers and IT professionals who are subscribers to MSDN or TechNet, as well as to members of the Technology Adoption Program (TAP) and the TechBeta program. Beta 2 will also be more broadly available to additional developers and IT professionals, as well as consumer technology enthusiasts, in the coming weeks as part of the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP).

• With the release of Windows Vista beta 2, we have focused on improving the experience, reliability and overall quality of Windows Vista for both enterprise and enthusiast audiences, providing a more complete and productive testing environment for customers.

a. Enterprise Call to Action for beta 2: We are encouraging enterprises to continue testing Windows Vista for deployment via the beta 2 build, as well as to download the new Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0, and to provide feedback on the enhanced features, such as search/organize capabilities, mobility enhancements, and improvements to application compatibility and deployment.

b. Consumer Call to Action for beta 2: We are encouraging consumer technology enthusiasts to utilize the Windows Vista Upgrade advisor to test their PCs’ ability to run Windows Vista Beta 2. If the PCs are capable, enthusiasts can obtain Windows Vista Beta 2 via the CPP program and begin experiencing the new premium consumer features, such as Windows Media Player 11, enhancements to Media Center, new photo capabilities, and enhanced organizational tools. (More details on the CPP program will be available in the coming weeks.)

• In addition, Windows Vista beta 2 brings new opportunities for developers and IHVs to begin building software/hardware that will bring compelling and differentiated value to customers

a. Developer Call to Action for beta 2: With Windows Vista beta 2, we are encouraging developers to continue testing their applications for compatibility, start building gadgets or prototyping applications, and get up to speed on improvements to WinFX.

b. IHV Call to Action for beta 2: With this build, we are encouraging our hardware partners to ramp up their driver development teams and engage in driver development.
