Sentillion, a company that specializes in bringing remote access capabilities to the health care industry is looking to use virtualization technology to give businesses an easier and more cost-effective alternative to such traditional methods as VPNs and Web portals. The product, named vThere, virtualizes a computer desktop, and via a VPN connection, allows users in remote locations access to desktop applications, just as if they were sitting in front of that computer. This will allows physicians and other care givers access to patient medical records and examinations while maintaining network security and not compromising compliance issues under Federal HIPPA regulations.
"Now we can have a virtual workstation and virtual image, like we offer on the network, but in [the doctor’s] own office," Bob Burritt, networking and technology manager for Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, recently told eWeek.com. "Also, this [virtualized environment] is shielded from the rest of the system, and all the connectivity is behind the scenes."
