Pipex, Intel ready WiMAX service in U.K.

I just saw this on EEtimes good news for the people who live in London UK

Pipex Wireless, the U.K. broadband wireless licensee joint venture between Pipex and Intel Corp., is planning commercial WiMAX services next year following successful testing of its technology and service offering in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The group is working with Airspan Networks and using that company’s gear for its 3.6GHz trials, which the joint venture says have been successfully completed. Using both indoor and outdoor antennae powered by Intel Rosedale chipsets, Pipex claims WiMAX can deliver near symmetric services in most environments at typical broadband speeds.

Internal antennae are said to have delivered data at rates in excess of 2Mbit/s up and down at a range of 1.2km from the base station with no direct line of sight. External antennae have achieved speeds of 10Mbit/s down and 9Mbps up at 1.2km from the base station.

Pipex has also trialled longer range external antennas, which have achieved 6Mbit/s down and 4Mbit/s up at a range of 6km from the base station. Mike Read, CEO of Pipex said: In our next stage, we are undertaking commercial trials delivering end-to-end WiMAX services with a number of local authorities and live customers.
