An Opportunity is Knocking …..
Posted by Jack Cook on 09/30/06 in Axim, Pocket PC Phones, PocketPC, Smart Phones, Software, iPAQ
Every once in a while you get an opportunity "knocking at your door" and this is one of those times.
When I got my first Pocket PC, the very first program I purchased was RESCO Explorer, the second program I purchased was TextMaker. I have never had a pocket PC without both these programs installed since that time.
Why? Because productivity was the name of the game and these two programs provided me with the opportunity to maintain my personal productivity at a very high level.
For those of you that have NOT tried SoftMaker Office, it is a wordprocessor and spreadsheet combination that once you try it, you will ALWAYS use it. It is just absolutely incredible to see and use such a powerful and easy to use program. No more will you ever be concerned about how your work will "interface" with Microsoft Office. It just does and does so flawlessly.
I encourage you to "open the door" of opportunity and try out the public beta of SoftMaker Office 2006. I am convinced that after you try it, you will add this powerful program to your cadre of "must have" programs.
The 2007 Best Software Awards Finalists
Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine has announced the 2007 Best Software Awards finalists and has listed them on the nomination page. A finalist icon appears next to their name on the nominations listings page. Winners will be announced with the publication of the 2007 Buyer’s Guide, and will appear on-line no later than October 16.
This was an extraordinary opportunity to test a myriad of outstanding products. For the consumer, when you just are not sure what product will suit your needs, this listing of nominees and finalists can serve as a huge help in making a decision on which product you want to purchase.
Take a moment and navigate over to the Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine site and look at the list. You will be impressed with the number of nominees and I expect will be pleased with the choices of finalists.

Universal Sonic Toothbrush
Posted by Chris Leckness on 09/29/06 in General
Sonic toothbrushes vibrate at 40,000 times per minute, and clean far better than traditional toothbrushes. In fact, jewelry stores use the same technology to clean fine jewels. Most sonic toothbrushes cost over $100 and don’t give you a choice of toothbrush. Further, refill toothbrushes are expensive. The batteries of these models are proprietary and cannot be replaced, so when they wear out you must buy a new toothbrush.
Enter the Universal Sonic Toothbrush for $49.95. It runs on a AA battery and uses the toothbrush of YOUR choice. Buy it here!

Mobius 2006 Boston - Day 3
Posted by Chris Leckness on 09/29/06 in Off topic
Day 3 was just as long as day 2, but unfortunately most of it was NDA material.
After breakfast, Wes Salmon, Microsoft leapfrogged the first speaker to show some no camera, no laptop goodies. After Derek, Michael Gartenberg from Jupiter Research talked to us about customer trends in the Mobility Industry.
Next up was Horace Luke of Microsoft, he showed off some AMAZING things to come (which unfortunately, I cannot share atm). After the pony show, Horace pitched three separate customer bases at us and we broke into groups to design the device of the future for that person. This was an extremely difficult excercise without comparing to something already out there. I felt like I was lost in space with my group since it was for the "mid 20’s female socialite", Luckily we had Paul O’Brien from Modaco and Susi from Shiny Shiny. Their hip nature and youth help a great bit. Oh, and look for a patent coming soon from Rich Brome (Phonescoop).
This design excercise took a good part of the second part of the day. After we presented out design ideas to the group, we had a suggestion session for Mobius and parted ways.
Shortly after breaking up it was time to get in a cab with Arne Hess and Jame Kendrick to head downtown for our dinner meeting with Don, Steve, and Jack.
Mobius is a great time every year (My 2nd time) and the speakers make the event. Of course, our input is heard at these, but I come for the knowledge I can get. (a few freebies don’t hurt either) I was really pleased to get to meet Jim Morrison (no, not that one, the CEO of I-mate) and Brian from Sling Media.
Boston Engadget Reader Meetup - Success and fun
Posted by Chris Leckness on 09/28/06 in Off topic
Since the Engadget Guys were in Boston for Mobius, Peter Rojas setup a nice event for Engadget readers. Since I am a reader, why not… lets go!
They were giving out Engadget Tshirts to the 1st (insert number) folks through the door. I met up with James Kendrick, Jack Cook, Steven Hughes, Arne Hess, and Don Sorceneli for dinner at Boston Beer Works and we ate and drank. (and we were merry!)
After our dinner, we walked 2 blocks down the road to Jillian’s for the Engadget gig. We were welcomed to a LONG line. I was about the 256th person through the door. I think there ended up being 500-600 out for the evening.
Engadget had some vendors out to show off some great products. (PS. Jack will tell you more about one of them soon and I will be letting you see some great Slingbox items too!) In addition to the Tshirts, They gave out free beer tickets too!
The guys showed us the 9 finalist in their "Commercial Contest. After a Q&A with Peter Rojas, Ryan Block, and Paul Miller from Engadget, the guys threw all sorts of raffled freebies out to the readers. Don Sorcenilli won a Sling Box Pro too!

Mobius 2006 Boston - Day 2
Posted by Chris Leckness on 09/28/06 in Site Items
The day started off with a nice traditional breakfast as a group. We then got to our seats to get started. John Starkweather talks and welcomes all the attendees. We then went around the room to introduce ourselves. Click the read more for the list of attendees…
The 2nd day started out with Derek Snyder from Microsoft demonstrates some new items coming soon for Windows Mobile. He showed some powertoys coming soon as well as some demos of the upcoming AKU3 update and an Xbox Live demo on a smartphone. Pretty exciting stuff to come guys!
Next Nick White showed off some great things about Vista followed by a demo of the Mobile Device Center in Vista. ( see video )
After lunch, Rafe Blandford (allaboutSymbian) gave a very detailed overview of the state of the business for Symbian.
The next speaker was very passionate and a fun speaker, Jim Morrison, CEO of I-Mate. Jim was fun and talked about the state of business with I-Mate. He also crushed a couple device naming myths and told a story about how the JAQ came to be, apparently a coporate customer asked for a full function Windows Mobile device that was intentionally "Ugly". This customer wanted something that did what they needed, but was ugly enough not to be stolen. Jim also announced that I-mate is to release 15 new devices, many of them unique devices only available to I-mate, over the next 12 months. They are moving to a new structure for devices, I-mate will break its devices into three different classes: "Ultimate" for the High End Guys, "Stealth" - Consumer Grade and "Light" (lower end mass-market devices).
Next up was Brian from Sling Media to talk about their new lineup of Sling Players. See Story here.
Finally, a ComVu demo of some really nice streaming video applications for Mobile Devices using a web based control center. Some REALLY nice stuff!
We then loaded up and cruised over to the Harbor for Dinner and Sailing for a couple hours, see photos.
No more ESPN Mobile!
Posted by Chris Leckness on 09/28/06 in Pocket PC Phones, Smart Phones
I had high hopes for this service when I first saw a demo at CES last January.
Reading over at Engadget Mobile today, I saw that they are ceasing operations as of December 31, 2006.
Our own Richard Strattan, took the plunge earlier this year.
If you visit ESPN Mobile, you will see that you can continue the service until then or you can cancel the service earlier without an early cancellation fee.

Yesterday at Mobius, Derek Snyder and Nick White from Microsoft gave us a demo of some of the functions of the Windows Vista Mobile Device Center.
This video is not super, but you can make out some good info and the audio is quite important too.
