Windows Live Search for Mobile
Posted by Jack Cook on 11/30/06 in PocketPC, Smart Phones, Software
Kevin over at jkOnTheRun found a slick piece of freeware today that I finally got a moment to try. Although it is limited in the cities you can search, if you are in one of the "big cities", it is a very cool addition to have on your device.
POST UPDATE: I had indicated above that it is "limited" in cities but that is an incorrect statement. You can actually search any city you’d like, just click on the link labeled "Choose a new location", and type in an address, city, ZIP code, airport code, whatever you want into the location box…then we’ll try to find it for you, and you can search around it! (special thanks to Steve from Microsoft for the tip)
Leaving near Boston, I often find my way in there to get some great food in the North End but there are so many other places to that I have never gone to. Now with this program, I can see the traffic getting into Boston, find a restaurant and get directions … it’d pretty cool and definitely worth the download.
I attached a few screen shots for you to see. There is a group of three I captured of the school I was the Principal of before I retired … I had to look to see it it was still standing.
You can download the cab file of Windows Live Search for Mobile here.
Take a moment and jump over to jkOnTheRun to see what Kevin had to say about Windows Live Search for Mobile: the U.S. on your phone?

Zune Hits #2 Out of the Chute
Posted by Jack Cook on 11/30/06 in Music Players
Zune reaches No. 2 in its debut week
Todd Bishop wrote an article in the Seattle Post Intelligencer reporting that Microsoft Corp.’s Zune music player claimed a No. 2 spot among portable media devices in its first week on the U.S. retail market.
I’m impressed and my guess is that Apple has some concern. A new item, loaded with features that has people talking, looking, analyzing and ultimately buying.
There is no question that the distance between #1 and #2 is BIG but to jump in at that spot is pretty impressive. Yes, the media hype clearly helped that initial grasp of this spot so Microsoft still has a long way to go to firm it up … only time will tell how it all ends up.
Market research firm NPD Group said sales of the Microsoft player edged out devices from previous second-place holder SanDisk Corp. in the week ended Nov. 18. But Zune was a distant second to Apple Computer Inc.’s iPod, and its second-place showing came amid widespread media attention and launch hype.

Posted by Jack Cook on 11/30/06 in Music Players
Looking for a neat Christmas present? This is a neat addition to anyone who has an iPod.
The
iTalk Pro combines simplicity with versatility, to allow iPod users to faithfully record under real-world conditions. The iTalk Pro plugs directly into the iPod’s dock connector. It’s the most compact configuration possible, eliminating the need for extra cables and adapters.
Easy, one-touch operation allows users to concentrate on what they’re hearing, instead of how to operate the equipment. iTalk Pro can record in stereo or mono. Built-in twin microphones record in stereo at 44.1 kHz to yield professional, CD-quality recordings. But iTalk Pro also features a stereo 1/8″ (3.5 mm) input jack to accommodate external microphones for greater stereo separation.
iTalk Pro, priced at $49.99, is now available at Griffin’s website.
The "boys" are fighting!
Posted by Jack Cook on 11/30/06 in The Internet
Sometimes I think we are constantly watching a giant “soap opera”. Everyday in the news there is always something about someone going after someone else and today is no exception … but the difference today is that it is it’s the “big boys”.
Google wants to create digital copies of books. Sounds pretty good on the surface BUT a few publishers and the Authors Guild have brought suit.
In their effort to stay on top during this battle, Google has subpoenaed Amazon.com, Yahoo and Microsoft as well as a few others …. ah, just keep bringing more folks into the battle, it makes the “soap” more interesting!
Check out the latest setback for here at Yahoo! News … sort of interesting that this is from Yahoo! News (it’s really an AP article).
Microsoft to release pro Vista Today
Posted by Jack Cook on 11/30/06 in Laptops, Software, Tablet PC, Ultra Mobiles
Today is the day that businesses get an opportunity purchase Microsoft’s NEW operating system, Vista. This applies to those businesses that purchase “bulk” Windows licenses. Unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be), consumers still have to wait which is good in my opinion for the consumer but clearly a shot in the “back side” for PC manufacturers.
With an expected huge rollout in the business community, major “hidden flaws” will surface, huge support will come from Microsoft to the business community, fixes will be made and the end result is that the consumer will most likely get a product that will be stronger. So don’t fret that you have to wait … it may well be a good thing!
Brian Bergstein, an AP Technology writer, posted an article today that was an interesting read. In part he said the following:
Microsoft and computer vendors contend that Vista will make Windows machines more secure, powerful and graphically dynamic, especially when combined with other products Microsoft is releasing simultaneously. Those include new back-end server software for businesses, as well as Office 2007, which brings sweeping changes to widely used programs such as Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
It’s not a bad article and worth the read. You can read Brian’s post, Microsoft to release pro Vista today, here

This looks like a pretty slick service that might well be worth checking out especially if you truly like to Experience Mobility. Today, GrandCentral has begun to offer Unlimited Free Service and an Expanded Feature Set
GrandCentral Communications, Inc. announced that it will offer unlimited inbound calling to its users for Free. An enhanced, paid version of the service with additional features will also be available once the company completes its beta testing early next year. Both plans give customers a local GrandCentral telephone number that will allow them to answer all of their calls from any of their existing phones (cell, work, home, etc.), enable access to voicemail by phone, email, or online, and provide unprecedented control over inbound calls and other unique features.
Yahoo! Mail (beta)
The folks at PC Magazine think that the Yahoo! Mail (beta) is a very good webmail application and they believe it has gotten even better. They feel there is an occasional “hiccup” but overall it is the best Internet mail program out there. The interface…well, they feel it is just superior!
You be the judge of what they say and take a look here to read their review … I was impressed and I think you will be too!
Of course, the best part is that it costs $0.00
This is what they said:
Free, responsive, and intuitive. Embedded RSS reader.
Typical beta-instability issues at times. No Opera or Safari support.
