Elrendel (Dave Matson) reviews the Sprint Treo 700wx.
Personally, I have a desire to own a single “converged” device, one that incorporates all the items I want and need in my daily life. This device is not the one for me. I was disappointed that the phone lacked Wireless Wi-Fi and a GPS Receiver, as well as the limited 240×240 pixel screen size. So I will keep looking for a device that offers these additional functions that I require.
However, I readily accept that a great many people out there only want or need a combo PDA with PCS phone running on the WM5 platform, and with that in mind, the Palm Treo 700wx is a very powerful device, performing all of the tasks that it is advertised as being able to perform. The clarity of the phone service was first rate, when I had a good signal (which was about 95% of the time), and every PocketPC program that I tried out worked on this device. The Voice-Mail Management system was absolutely first rate, the best I’ve ever dealt with (and I work in Telecom!). The device’s ability to use a data service like EvDO was likewise first rate when I was able to obtain a signal from the service provider (which unfortunately turned out to be about 1% or 2% of the time). The Wireless Wi-Fi also worked incredibly well, but I was saddened that there was no setting that I could find to disable the NAG screen. If I was not holding-out for the right converged device, I would be inclined to want this device for myself!
