Cubis and BoxWorld — Perfect solutions when you need a break
Windows Mobile has become an integral part of my life over the past 10 years allowing me to complete a variety of everyday routines (and some not so everyday) in a simple, easy and efficient manner. I’ve used hundreds of programs to perform a variety of tasks. Some I’ve kept and other’s have gone by the wayside either because I don’t need the functionality they provided or there was a better solution that appeared.
Now we were asked at Smartphone and Pocket PC magazine to talk about the ONE APPLICATION we use every day but I have to expand that to two because I am always using one or the other when I want that short break. Both are challenging, both are fun and I’ve used both for years.
There are basics that become a part of every new device I get. Programs like Spb Plus, Spb Diary, Resco Explorer 2007 and RESCO’s Photo Viewer are “must have” applications that I need and use every day. But there are other applications that “complete” the experience and one such application is a game called Cubis from Astraware.
Cubis is a game converted for Pocket PC use that features two modes of play: Puzzle and Arcade, with 100 hand-designed levels that keep you excited each time you play the game. For me, it is the perfect companion to fill those moments in time when you just want a diversion from your routine.
Essentially you slide blocks matching same colors and attempt to clear a required number of cubes before time runs out. Cubis has excellent graphics and a sound track that keeps the adrenaline flowing as you try to complete each of the 100 levels of play. This is a game that you will play in either short or long intervals of time satisfying that urge for a break in your routine.
Cubis has become an addictive challenge not only to me but my wife as well. This challenging game is extremely easy learn (there is an excellent ten level tutorial) and often I will find it difficult to put it down!
If you want a game that is just plain fun to play, then Astraware’s Cubis is a “must have” for your collection of applications.
The second “diversion” I use is a FREEWARE game called BoxWorld. This Pocket PC game is an adaptation of a game created by Jeng-Long Jiang. This highly addictive game will keep you busy for months on your Pocket PC but you need to be careful if you decide to play it during the work day. There is a very real possibility that company productivity will drop significantly.
I like play for short periods of time filling a need for a break in the day but often will find that the “short break” has turned into a long game session. However if you can stop playing, when you return you are back where you left off trying to complete the puzzle.
It is simple to play (or at least initially it seems that way). You are given a screen where you have to move the boxes … sounds simple, but as you progress through the levels more and more thought goes into figuring out the strategy you will use to complete the level. It’s fun, it’s addicitive and you will thoroughly enjoy it.
You can get Cubis here at Astraware and you can get BoxWorld here at PocketPCFreeware. Good luck and enjoy those moments of gameplay!
