It didn’t take long …
… for the iPhone to be hacked for shell access
Engadget Mobile reported that the guys at the hacker crew of IRC channel #iPhone have managed to enable shell access to the iPhone and its just been a week! Evidently there is not a lot to hack but I bet Stevie baby is somewhat concerned that it was so quick.
the iPhone’s 30-pin dock connector features the same pinouts as the iPod, so creating a serial connection simply involved connecting up a resistor, ground, and RS-232 level converter and running a few commands from iphone interface. The resulting shell is pretty basic, but features a TFTP client — meaning that we should see a flood of attempts to open the iPhone up in the coming weeks.
Hmmm … maybe, just maybe, we really will see the ability to add 3rd party applications … the “old fashioned way”!
