How easy is the AT&T 8525 WM6 ROM Upgrade?

Earlier today Breley posted about the AT&T 8525 WM6 ROM UPGRADE so I downloaded the ROM upgrade and had to make the decision if I was going to do it then or wait until I returned from the VON trade show I was on my way to this morning.  Of course, knowing that I had the ROM and if I was off to the show, I would be thinking about it all day so I decided that I would give it a try, hope that it was fast then head off to Boston.

Let me tell you; the install was faster than they said and it was absolutely the smoothest ROM update I have ever performed.  I was incredibly pleased how easy the process was and was even more pleased at the smoothness that Vista handled the entire process.  So what was the experience like?  The first thing I did was to attach my device and run the install.

As you can see, it began by verifying the software on my PC and installed some device driver software.

There are 28 more pictures and an explanation of what was happening after the break

Then it gave me the message that the HTC USB Sync was installed successfully.

02

and my 8525 went from a BLACK screen

03

to a colorful screen letting me know the process was beginning

04

And all of a sudden the Wizard appeared on my PC

And then the update began…

10

As progress showed on the PC

11

It also showed on the 8525….

15

It hit the 100% in far less time than was advertised and I got a congratulations, the update was complete and now I had to follow the sync instructions

16

As happy as I was about the successful install, this is where the adrenaline starts to pump.  Is Vista going to recognize the device?  How long will it take?  Am I going to have aggravation?  Well, it did recognize the device very quickly, it literally took minutes to sync and there was absolutely NO aggravation.  I was totally pleased with the entire process.

As soon as the update completed, my device booted and I got the AT&T screen

17

and in the lower right of my screen, the device driver software was installing

18

but I had PANIC for a second

19

but it was only for a second because I knew the ROM upgrade was successful and this message was something I knew I could ignore … whew!  Then as if by magic, the small green WMDC screen appeared and was quickly covered over by this screen

20

and then ABSOLUTE HAPPINESS … I got the connected screen and it appeared in seconds.  I was a very happy camper!!

21

So the sync setup began and it could not have been easier, faster or better.  It was a great process and it was fast, very fast.

All of a sudden my device did its self install…

22

booted with that familiar Windows Mobile 6 startup screen

23

My Today screen appeared and surprisingly it found TomTom6 on my micro-SD card and installed the cab file….

24

I got the message that the 8525 was all set to sync and that process began

25

It glided through the sync process with 400+ contacts, my calendar for the past 6 months and hundreds of saved tasks

26

It finished with the entire process from start to end lasting a total of 29 minutes

27

How cool was that?  Very cool … now it was time to sync with my laptop.  Will it take?  Will it be as fast?

So I connected the 8525, it immediately saw the device and installed the driver software.

28

and in seconds, it was connected and ready to sync with my laptop

29

Was it a smooth process?  Yes!  Absolutely!  My hat is off to HTC, AT&T and Microsoft … it was painless and WOW, what a difference an OS makes!

I played with the 8525 for just a few minutes and was really pleased with the initial performance and there was one feature that made me really happy.  There was an "X" button that really closed programs!!  Very nice!

So, I was off to Boston to attend the VON conference.  But wait … even though I didn’t install any software, it did install TomTom  (for some reason) from my memory card.  So I quickly paired my GPS with the 8525, configured and re-registered TomTom 6 and set a route to the Convention Center … and I was off and I had a BIG smile on my face!

With a new device I like to use it for a day or so before I add anything.  This is like having a new device … noticeably faster, very responsive and it has some neat features.  Tomorrow I’ll slowly start to add a few programs to make my ability to Experience Mobility even better.

Oh, and the VON conference was terrific!

  1. wow…my experience was almost 180 out from this. It took me a couple of hours of tinkering just to get the installer to recognize the device was attached, even though the mobility center could see it and sync fine. After the install, which I will admit was quite smooth, it would not sync. It was another mad hunt for settings to figure out what happened there. I’m up and running finally (writing this on the 8525 now) and all of my ‘must have’ applications are back on board and humming along nicely. Hopefully it was worth the effort and the wait.
