Exchange 2007 Service pack 1 - Why it’s important for Mobile Users

Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1 has just been released to the web for Download.   It even made the front page of the latest Technet Magazine which is quite surprising for a Service Pack.

There are many key enhancements in Service Pack 1 however from a mobile perspective there are some very important additions.

With Service Pack 1 we have added 30+ new policies for Exchange Activesync.  These new policies will require a future version of Windows Mobile (similar to System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008) however they can be implemented within your Exchange 2007 environment now ready for when that version becomes available.

There are 2 different categories of policies - the first set control the Sync, Authentication and Encryption settings.  The second set are really focused on controlling functions on the device.

OQO 02 for just $1069.99!

This deal is so good that when I read the note from my friend Warner at Gottabemobile I could not believe it! TigerDirect is offering a $780 rebate in the $1849 OQO 02! I really do not know how long this deal is going to last because I’m sure that many people out there would like to own this device and the only thing that have stopped them was the price!

How much will it cost? Creative Zen - 32GB

Unintentional or not, we are seeing a 32GB Zen on the Creative Zen site.  A slick player that has been hugely popular is about to become even more so if this new version is released with a reasonable price tag attached.

Electronista caught this item via epiZENter.net and said: "The jukebox maker directly references to 32GB of flash storage both at its overview and specifications pages and explains the impact of the extra memory: the unannounced model will hold up to 8,000 songs or 120 hours of video, Creative says. It would continue to support SDHC cards for more than 4GB of extra storage."When will we see it?  No word yet but possibly early next year.

So…..

1) If you have a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC or Windows Mobile 6 device that came with Office Mobile you can use the FREE upgrade to get support for Office 2007.

2) If you have a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device (ie Smartphone) which didn’t come with Office Mobile (eg. The HTC S620) then you can buy Office Mobile from the Handango Retail store.

3) If you have a Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone there isn’t unfortunately an upgrade path or way of getting Office Mobile.

From Dynamism.com comes this video that demonstrate how easy is to play Quake 2 in a Wibrain B1 UMPC. Unfortunately, UMPCs are not yet powerful enough to play games like Halo 3 but in a not far future we are going to see that kind of performance and then we are going to say bye bye to our PSPs. Wink

2 New Mobilitysite and Aximsite Contests!

Contest #1 - Win a Bluetooth GPS

OK, I need your help, so let’s do a contest. After sitting unused for 6 months, the download section needs love. Go forth and help us populate the download section with freeware, legal themes, and trials. Let’s grab the best. Make sure that these files are legal for us to host though. :)

So, basically, just log in and upload. Make sure to write a good description. For themes, include a screenshot. Make sure to place them in the right categories too.

On December 22nd, I will choose one download at random. The uploader of that download will win an i.Trek M5 Bluetooth GPS!

Contest #2 - Win Handmark Software

Thanks to Wdement, we have some great applications from Handmark. This contest is mainly for fun, but you can score one of the 6 copies simply by uploading photos into the photo gallery. This gallery is hosted on the mobilitysite domain. All you have to do if you are on the aximsite side is to log in with your aximsite username and password. I will select 6 winners at random on December 22nd.

ps. I forgot all about this photo gallery in the merger, but tonight’s reminiscing of last years Mobius had me hunting my photos and I forgot that it got lost in the shuffle.

Don’t miss the other contests going on too…

  • SplashID 4 Rainy Day Photo Contest (Nov 30)
  • Theme Contest - Win $200 in Software (Nov 30)
  • Mobius is Underway in Amsterdam

Not many people really know what Mobius is all about, but it’s a great time for those in attendance and the conversations and sessions that happen at the conference help shape the industry via feedback and breakout sessions. This is how Mobius is defined by John Starkweather….

    mobius-day1-01

In the two times that I have attended Mobius, I learned more in those couple days than I can ever really describe. In addition to the great demos and talks, the comradery is wonderful. Some of the best folks I am happy to call friends were made through Mobius. The never ending conversation part is very true too. When the conference is over, the conversation will not stop. We, present and past Mobius attendees continuously discuss the trends and new gadgets in our own little online slice of the pie. It’s a great resource for us and I believe that the feedback we provide collectively help impact the market. Anyhow, enough of my rambling about Mobius, lets hear from some of those that are in attendance right now…

    • As he always does, Jason Dunn provides some great coverage of Mobius each year. This year is no different. Check out Mobius through Jason’s eyes.
    • Judie from Gear Diary has some great photos and a recap from herself and Jenneth too.
    • Matt Miller’s 2 cents (or maybe 2 dollars) can be found over at the Mobile Gadgeteer.

Congrats to my buddy Mauricio from Geekzone for getting to attend his 1st Mobius too! There are a lot of great folks there at this one. Have fun guys!

3G iPhone in Coming in 2008

iphone_34_thumb I hope it comes faster than the Cingular, now AT&T Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6 upgrade (check the date of this post), which still isn’t here. The folks that ask me day to day about my thoughts on the iPhone normally end up telling me that the lack of 3g is what is keeping them with their Windows Mobile Phone. One guy today actually mentioned this to me at lunch. He is using a heavily modded 8525 and says that he can’t live without 3g.

Well in an article on Bloomberg.com, they talk with AT&T and get confirmation that the iPhone will get 3g sometime next year. Steve Laser posted something on this last week, but the rumor is made more official now…

Apple Inc. will introduce a version of the iPhone next year that can download from the Internet at a faster rate, AT&T Inc. Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson said.

The device will operate on third-generation wireless networks, Stephenson said today at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California. San Antonio-based AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S.

“You’ll have it next year,” Stephenson said in response to a question about when the 3G iPhone would debut. He said he didn’t know how much more the new version will cost than the existing model, which sells for $399. Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs “will dictate what the price of the phone is,” he said.

If you remember correctly, one of the reasons why Apple opted for EDGE was the battery life, this Bloomberg article covers that too…

“We’ve got to see the battery lives for 3G get back up into the five-plus-hour range,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll see that late next year.”

Google Maps on your mobile phone.

Yesterday Susan posted about the NEW Google Maps. Here is a little video that tells you a bit about how it works.

The new "My Location" (beta) feature on Google Maps for mobile helps you know where you are on the map, even if your phone doesn’t have GPS. Just press [0] to move the map to your approximate location. Save time and tedious keystrokes finding where you are, what’s around you, and how to get there.
