Sony Ericsson W380 Walkman Phone

Today Sony Ericsson announced its latest mid-level Walkman music phone, the grape purple colored W380. This tri-band GSM/EDGE folder handset is intended for both the North American and world markets, and therefore comes in two different configurations; the North American version offering 850MHz support, the world version swapping that out for 900MHz instead.

The device sports a hidden 36×128 pixel OLED display on the outside in addition to external touch sensitive music controls. Music can be stored in the 14MB of internal storage space, or on the provided 512MB Sony M2 memory card. The Walkman music player in the W380 supports MP3, AAC, and AAC+ music formats as well as Sony’s MegaBass mode.

New to Sony Ericsson is a set of gesture controls for muting inbound calls or enter snooze mode for an alarm. This appears to work similarly to the shake control in Sony Ericsson’s W580 that we recently reviewed. Another interesting feature is Sony Ericsson’s light effects that can identify inbound callers as well as flash along with the music in the room. Like many Walkman phones, the W380 also supports the TrackID service for identifying music, and even has its own FM radio receiver and a pair of built-in stereo speakers. The W380’s Bluetooth system supports high-speed EDR data and A2DP stereo headphones, and the W380 can also be used with a USB cable as a mass storage device.

The W380 should start shipping in Q1 of 2008. It will be available in purple as well as a more sedate gray color scheme.
