Why an Ebook Reader?
Posted by Chris Leckness on 11/19/07 in Amazon, Kindle
Seems the web is gaga over this new ebook reader from Amazon. I kind of see why, but on the other hand, I wonder… Why?
With the advancements in screen resolution and memory capacity on PDAs, Pocket PC Phones, etc… Why would you want a stand alone reader? I have to admit though, I am not much of a fiction reader, but I do read a few non-fiction books in the ebook format on my Pocket PC Phones.
For ease of getting content, I can see some of these readers being useful, especially the Kindle. The linking of Amazon over the air via EVDO is pretty nice, but it’s really not tough to drop an ebook onto your SD or MicroSD card.
I just don’t get it really. I have seen some peers online getting excited about this Amazon Reader and I just don’t get it.
What are your thoughts?
PS. There are 139 Customer Reviews of a Device just announced on Amazon. How does that happen?

I’ve read eBooks on my Axim 51v for a few years, but then I got a Sony PRS-500, let me tell you, I would never go back to PDA for reading a book.
The only drawback of those eInk books are the lack of backlight, which is due to the fact that the display are not transparent and requires front lighting.
The answer is E-Ink technology.
It won’t cause eye strains if you read for a period of time
I am thinking of getting one… I read ALOT…. and miss the “big page” ( I have been reading via Mobipocket on my AT&T Tilt)
I could always use the excuse “I am going to review it for Mobility Site”….hmmm…hadn’t thought of THAT :)
The question could be… why EVDO?
And why an always-on connection on a gadget with mostly offline purposes?
Wi-fi wouldn’t be enough?
I do a lot of reading on my low end cell phone. I think special purpose eReaders will get squeezed out by phones on one side and ultra mobile PCs on the other. You can download prepackaged books for phones from http://www.booksinmyphone.com if you have mobile internet you can browse and install with just a few clicks.
