Mobilitysite Changes In Place

The Servers

Ok, so the dust is starting to settle from the explosion that occured this past weekend. As most of you know, we have moved our 2 servers from our local host to a more central datacenter. The same company is running the show, but the boxes are not in my town anymore. We are a few hops closer to the major backbone now and this alone should mean much improved performance. We are bound to hit a couple small hurdles as things settle in, but for the most part we are screaming fast now. (compared to the last couple months for sure)

The Comments

Just before we moved servers, I had a poll asking how you like to comment. I got mixed opinions and chose to take some of the suggestions and to go with my gut as well.

The way we were doing things was causing a ton of extra database queries. Everytime the single post page was brought up, it was making a few queries to the forum database as well as the blog database to bring all the info to the page. The reason for the dual methods of commenting (forum and blog comments) was to allow our rich forum base to comment without having to leave the forums as well as allow the blog crowd the ability to comment without having to register in the forums too. This method is ineffecient and confusing to both the forums folks and blog folks and to our writers following comments.

I decided to do away with forum commenting. Each time a post is made to the News portion of Mobilitysite an announcement thread is still made in the news forum with a link to the article. I urge the forum users that want to comment to hop over and comment on the blog portion. I am working to make the comments more dynamic as well. Thanks for your patience with all this. I am sure that this method will make things easier for everyone.
