UPDATE: HTC Releases ROM update (version 1.62.502.0)!

htclogo I know I just posted the WMexperts retraction, but it looks like AT&T won’t be issuing the ROM update today, but HTC will! Check it out:

Why Update:

This ROM update is intended for the AT&T Tilt only and users should not load or attempt to load this version on any other device as it may cause serious issues/damage.

This software update provides:

  • Enhanced Bluetooth performance.
  • Enables DTMF tones for the slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
  • Improves overall device performance and stability.
  • Includes Microsoft Adaptation Kit Update (AKU) 0.4.4.

This update does not have any video driver updates, so don’t be confused. This is not the “Big” update rumored to be coming in March for the Video Driver issue.

Please read the following important notes before starting the upgrade:

Before you proceed, please confirm that this software upgrade is a newer version than what is currently loaded on your device.
If it is the same version and your device is operating normally, there is no need to reload the software. To determine what version is running on your device, refer to the image left and note the ROM version, CPU, and Radio Version and then on your device, go to Start > Settings > System Tab > Device Information.

Before you run the ROM Upgrade Utility (RUU), make sure you check and do the following first:
  1. USB sync cable is connected to your device and PC to establish a connection with Activesync/Windows Mobile Device Center.
  2. The standby and hibernation modes are disabled on the computer.
  3. All running applications on the computer have been closed.
  4. Ensure that you device has a battery level of at least 50% (Start > Settings > System Tab > Power > Battery tab). If the battery “dies” during the upgrade process, there is a chance that it will not recover and will need to be sent to AT&T/HTC for repairs.
  5. The update can take up to 10 minutes so set aside time when you will not be interrupted.
  6. All data will be deleted from the device during the upgrade (music, pictures, 3rd party applications, etc); be sure to back up all of your data using Activesync/Windows Mobile Device Center or the built in Sprite Backup utility prior to upgrading.
Note: If using the Sprite Backup, be sure to copy the backup file to a storage card or to your PC before proceeding with the ROM update.
  7. Do Not interrupt the upgrade process or press any buttons until the process has been completed (the device will reset itself when the update is done).
General Procedure on Installing the ROM Update
  1. Back up your personal data from the Mobile Device to your computer using ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center or the Sprite Backup utility if you want to ensure you don’t lose any of your data.
  2. On your computer, run the ROM Update Utility (RUU) to install the ROM update to your Mobile Device. (Click on the Installation Instructions link below for the detailed procedure on how to install the ROM Update).
  3. Restore your personal data back to your Mobile Device using ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center or Sprite Backup. (Optional)

WARNING: During the upgrade process, do not attempt to make/receive calls, press any buttons on your device or disconnect the device from the USB cable as this will stop the update and your device will be rendered inoperable!!!

The upgrade process takes up to 10 minutes. It is recommended that you close all programs on your PC prior to starting the update program and do not open any applications or files while the update is in process. All personal data stored on the device will be lost. Make sure you save all pictures, videos, and important files to your PC prior to performing the update process.

After the Rom Update, I can no longer get my HSDPA icon. I used KaiserTweak and disabled and reenabled it doing a soft reset in between and in areas where I always got "H", I only get 3G. Also my signal strength in general does not seem as good and I am noticing MANY more dropped calls. Any Ideas?
  • Prior to installing the ROM, HArd reset your device. Sync your Tilt/TyTN II back to your computer. Make sure your ROM is extracted from the zipped file. Some "other" ROMS require the use of WinZip to open them. Install ROM update. That should cure your problems..

I am trying to run the rom update but cannot get past the first error 202 connection message. Tried shutting off, resetting, disconnecting the device etc. every time I run the RUU it errors on 202.

A small little glitch that I saw is when creating an appointment while in silent mode ... the phone switches to normal... not a big deal but its embarrassing when the phone goes of in class to the sounds of pacman. anyone else have this problem?

So wait, if I have the same software version, doesn't that make this just a hard reset?

I successfully flashed the new ROM.

After I began reinstalling my apps on my SD card, I encountered the annoying SD CARD2 problem.

For those who are not familiar with this, it's a Win CE bug, which makes the OS to "recognize" a new SD card, which is actually the real SD card.
The problem is related to Messaging.

    The solution is as follows:
    1) Disable Messaging from Start-Today.
    2) Run the built-in File Manager.
    3) Delete the (fake) SD CARD folder.
    4) Goto the SD CARD2 folder (which is the REAL SD card) and delete all Messaging related folders (ie attachment folders.
    5. Extract the SD card and SR.
    6. Run the File Manager, check that the SD card is now called SD CARD. If not - rename it from SD CARD2 to SD CARD.
    7. Exit the File Manager, re-enable Messaging from Start-Today.

USUALLY - this solves the problem.

I found that with this ROM - it DOESN'T.
So after 3 HRs and many many hours reinstalling my apps, I finally understood the problem, and changed all Messaging settings so that messages and attachments are now stored in main memory.
This includes the storage options available in Messaging, and several options available in Kaiser Tweak.

I know that this isn't a good idea, as it fills up memory very quickly, but it's the only solution that worked.

If anyone finds a better solution, please post it here.

Hey i just updated and my phone is stuck on the align screen thing. How do i get this fixed?
  • I updated and got all my items put back on the phone. It's working well. The bluetooth a2dp seemed to have a rougher time getting going with some stuttering but once it was going I had zero drop outs like I had experienced in the past so thats a good improvement in my book and the stuttering may have been due to my phone picking up my mail or some network operation at the time I started music playback.

now soft of my software doesnt work well...
  • Sain0rs
I updated and something that I've seen that as far as I see no one else has mentioned is that there's a new checkbox under Settings / Power Settings / Advanced that says "When Device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC."

I may be mistaken, but prior to installing this update I had wiped my device and aborted the AT&T trialware by doing the soft reset during the initial setup. I'd never done that before so the extra option could be there from that.

I haven't had a chance to update yet (i need to backup data first)

    anyone updated...and had any issues??
  • KCMatt
Thanks Doug! Would love to hear if there is any noticeable difference...
  • I just installed, nothing bad happened so far. Now time to rebuild. I usually run with it and my Motorokr S9's so improved bluetooth performance will be nice if they fixed anything around that part of the stack.

Thank you Susan for the Plug on MobilitySite!
