Use the Tilt as Your Full-Time MP3 Player?

Ever since I purchased my Tilt, I have been integrating it into all aspects of my life.  One of its primary functions now is as a digital audio player.  I purchased an 8GB microSD card and have loaded over 2,000 tracks on my Tilt, a combination of my personal collection and Zune subscription tracks.  In order to use the Tilt as my main audio player, I turned to Pocket Player from Conduits.  Thanks to Pocket Player, I was able to sell my Microsoft Zune and rely solely on the Tilt.  Find out more after the break.

Pocket Player is chock full of options and features.  Some features that I saw users complaining about and requesting on Zune forums I was able to obtain with the combination of the Tilt + Pocket Player.  Among them are bookmarking, an equalizer, DSP, plug-ins, and crossfade / gapless playback.  Pocket Player also includes Podcast and video support.  With the a data plan, you could take advantage of sites such as Stereogum or Fluxblog that offer free, legal MP3s and download them right to your Tilt (I did this over my most recent vacation; I racked up something like 490MB of data usage).  Thanks to the built-in Bluetooth support, I was able to purchase a set of Motorola HT820 Bluetooth stereo headphones and easily pair it up with the Tilt, and rock out to tunes through Pocket Player.  And with the most recent update to Pocket Player, the program will now take advantage of the existing AAC codec on the Tilt (iTunes Plus users can now rejoice).  Having support for MP3, WMA, and AAC helps put it on par with my old Zune.

But probably the biggest feature that I wasn’t expecting to love was SHOUTcast support. SHOUTcast is, at its most basic, Internet radio, with a ton of genres and stations to choose from.  I had some previous experience with XM online radio, so I expected something similar. And since I have the unlimited data plan for my Tilt, bandwidth / data was not an issue.

Oh. My. God.

SHOUTcast is awesome.

SHOUTcast takes what’s great about satellite radio, and then takes it to a whole new level. Why I never used this feature before (it was available on my old LifeDrive when I had Pocket Tunes) is beyond me.

I usually browse by genre. And there are a ton of them. By decade, language, and musical type. Under each genre are a number of stations. This plethora of choice is outstanding, and instantly makes my Tilt and Pocket Player even more valuable. I’ve been saying for a while now that Microsoft needs to add Internet radio as a feature on the Zune, for the simple sake that the Sansa Connect had it (both devices have Wi-Fi), and that struck me as a great and doable feature on the Zune platform. But having experienced it, I can say that it is not only a nice feature to have, it’s a must-have option. I want to switch it up on my Tilt? Just jump on over to the SHOUTcast list, and listen to what I fancy.

And that ultimately is what is making the Tilt more valuable than my Zune. I have absolutely the best of all worlds here. A lot of music on a memory card? Check. Subscription support? Check. Bluetooth headset support?  Internet radio support? CHECK. The fact that I don’t have as much memory as my Zune 80 is a trade off, but I can live with it since the Tilt + Pocket Player gives me a ton of options for my music fix.

That is my experience with my Tilt and music.  How about you?  Have you gone down this road?  Perhaps you use a different music program on your Tilt? Tell us about your setup!

    Shoutcast is indeed awesome.
Do you have it playing through pocket player on the tilt?
They (Shoutcast) seem to prefer winamp as far as playing on your pc. Any hints on setting that up? Thanks in advance!

I love my tilt..I use it as a modem to connect my home pc..

I am using pocket player with Plantronics 590 BT headset. The sound is aweful. Sounds like mono through both speakers or something. Very very flat. I tried messing with the EQ and it changes the sound a bit, but still sounds terrible. Is there a setting I am missing or something? If I run the Plantronics off my PC the sound is awesome. What could I be doing wrong?

here's a question about battery life and the bluetooth vs wired headphones....
I have been trying to search the internet and figure out if I should get bluetooth or the wired adaptor for headphones...
I really love my "old" full size wired headphones with great sound, but I am trying to figure out if I would get better performance with bluetooth headphones.
There seems to be a trade-off, but since I can't really go "test" a whole bunch of bluetooth headsets, and I don't have an adaptor for my headphones yet, I am concerned about sound quality, battery life (of both the tilt and the headphones).
Anyone have an opinion - bluetooth vs wired headphones? I'd love to hear it....

I am defiantly going to be testing out the pocket player.

And congrats on finding shoutcast - I have been listening to various stations for about four years now and I have a hard time not having it when I am in the car. (I have been known to save a stream or two and play it back on long trips - it really saves on programming my own playlists.)
It is also really great to be able to listen to ANY genre anytime of day without the incessant babbling of some schmo!

I found with the latest version, the scrolling / flick interface is much smoother (no complaints now.

It's the biggest flaw on the Tilt. Videos play better in WMP than Pocket Player, but even then, videos formatted for 320x240 are a bit jumpy and distract from the experience.

The other night I was listening to Internet Radio on Pocket Player over Wi-Fi through my Bluetooth Stereo headphones, sending a text message, and surfing the Internet in PIE. There was some performance hit, but it was not awful by my estimation. :)

I would never be able to switch my Zune for my Tilt as a media player... The lack of the headphone port (I have the headphone adapter, which I keep in my wallet, and it eventually bent to the point where it only works when you twist the connector around), only 32GB's available when the MicroSD's of that size are released, and the controls on the Tilt are the main 3 drawbacks for me. I use my Zune subscription, and have well over 7,000 songs from it, so my tilt as my main media player won't work for me. Even if I was to complete building my media server and put my music on it, then somehow stream all of my music from it to my tilt via 3g would still not be enough, I love using my Zune. I have a bunch of friends that have 'em because of my persuasion, and I'd be missing out on the Zune social. Plus the zune games will be coming out soon!

what are some other streaming music / internet radio sites that people are using?

    my favorite is: thestreamcenter.com/pda

it streams fm and am radio stations, and it works great on the tilt.
  • Hi Julio, I'm glad you're enjoying Pocket Player. I found it recently too and cannot do without it! I also use bluetooth headphones and have just received a Nokia AD-42W bluetooth stereo receiver. Together with my XDA Mini S these items beat the pants off any portable player I have tried. No iPhone for me!

I have a question though. I am considering upgrading to a Tilt (MDA Vario 3) but have heard the issues with the graphics drivers and the touch screen slowing the device down. Is this an issue in Pocket Player? When scrolling through song lists does it work smoothly?

Also in your experience has the lack of graphics drivers been an issue?

Lastly, my XDA really slows down while playing music over A2DP, I assume because it's encoding to A2DP on the fly. Does the Tilt slow down a lot when playing over bluetooth too?

I tried a Vario 3 out in a shop today and really like the hardware, but didn't get a chance to properly try the software.

    Many thanks

    Mark
  • I tried Pocket Player before Pocket Music for a few reasons:

Pocket Music didn't (doesn't?) support album art.

Pocket Music charged an extra $10 for AAC support.

Pocket Player looked to have better one-handed operation.

If I had hated Pocket Player, Pocket Music was my next choice, but alas, Pocket Player had me at "hello."
  • Is Pocket Player better than Pocket Music?

When I tried few months back, i wasn't satisfied with the 3d surround. Maybe it was my earphones (HTC' propitiatory) that makes it sound bad.

    Regards,
    NiCK Carty..

How do you get the .exe file to work on the Tilt? It will only use .cab files, right?
  • Rackers
When listening you can just turn off your screen and get more time. I have never ran out of battery when listening and workingout, but I haven't paid attention to the battery life. I recharge my tilt every day as a rule. I agree with an earlier post that I only turn on wi-fi when needed. I also turn off bluetooth when it's not needed.

Next time I hit the gym I'll check the battery before and after my 2 hour workout.

    @Jason

In my experience the tilt battery will play continuous music via bluetooth for 10-12 hours. The BT headset will probably run out of juice before the Tilt does.

Personally, I stream music off the net with my Tilt via HSDPA. I have a Voyager 855 BT stereo headset that will play music for 6-7 hours continuously, but streaming music AND using bluetooth will drain the Tilt battery in only 4-5 hours. Streaming via 3G will give you a slight performance increase of maybe an hour or so, but it's best to have the Tilt on shore power when streaming and using BT.
  • Oh, yes. It should definitely last on the Treadmill. I've listened to music on my BT headphones for longer than that.
  • Jason
Sorry, my question is how long can you play music to a bluetooth headset on a single charge. I understand other things may be running, but if you are not on a charger, how long will it last? My thought is if it would last while running on a treadmill for an hour or so.

    Thanks again.
  • I'm glad you have found this article useful!

Jason, I'm not the best person to ask, because I use BlackBerry Connect on my Tilt all the time due to work, so I'm always pulling email down and doing other things. With moderate music use and everything else, my battery will last a full day but will need recharging. I have a charge at my desk at work as well as in the car, so it hasn't been too much of an issue for me. Without music / Bluetooth (I leave Wi-Fi off unless I absolutely need it) I could go two days, barely.
  • Jason
How long does your Tilt typically last on a charge while streaming mp3's from your card?

    Thanks for the review.
  • Rackers
Thanks... I'm also a big fan of Pocket Player. Most of the buttons are large enough to use with a finger; which is great for me when working out. There are a fair share of plug-ins that enhance Pocket Player.

The largest complement that I have is toward Conduits is that I found a bug in Pocket Player that causes it to lock up in certain circumstances; I contacted support and provided details. Within one day I got a reply that they were able to duplicate and a fix is in the works. That response is so much better than most software companies, who you usually never hear back from.
  • Mike Davis
thanks for the article, I was just about to give up on getting Zune Pass to work and just keep using my MP3 player. Now maybe I can get rid of them and go to one device.
  • Great article Julio!
  • There were a few criteria that I needed fulfilled from a media player. One of them was WMA-DRM / subscription support. The other (and one I failed to mention in my initial article) was smooth, one-handed operation. Pocket Player had both (although the "flick and scroll" interface on Pocket Player is also pretty slick). Core Media Player couldn't do the subscription services, as far as I was aware, so I didn't bother.
  • David Gray
Do you think this beats out Core Media Player. I thought it was the "standard"? I liked your review and you have me thinking.
