Do I need a new Phone?

Of course not, most of us don’t. What makes us have this urge to update every time something new comes out? I haven’t a clue, but I suffer from this as well. The funny thing is that often times I come back to the same devices.
A couple years ago, I used the i-mate Kjam as my primary phone. I’d buy another or test one for a review and 2-3 weeks later, right back to the Kjam. Last year, it was the Palm Treo 750. For the last 6-7 months it’s the Tilt. I’ve been coming right back to the Tilt. I’ve got the iPhone, the Nokia n95, the HTC Advantage and Touch, the Blackberry Pearl, the Centro, and a couple other phones just laying around unused. Some people prefer some of those phones to the Tilt, but I keep going back to the Tilt. It’s not what you might think either. I don’t keep going back because I own it and the others I don’t, I own most of the others too.
Every time I see a new phone pop up like the HTC Diamond, the Touch Pro, or the Xperia X1, I get really excited for their release, but why? The Tilt is fine. Is it the Geek in me? Sure. I have little interest in owning the Diamond, but the Touch Pro and the Xperia X1 are a couple phones that look like they could upend the Tilt as my daily driver. We’ll see.
Do you find yourself buying new gadgets just because and end up going back what you were using before?

I would say everyone is trying to upgrade their phones once a year unless they are extremely satisfied with theirs.
No, the whole purpose of buying a new phone for me is because it does something better or has new/better features that my current model lacks.
That said, the old phone gets sold so I never have the option of going back.
I’m currently happy with my Motorola Q9h. I wouldn’t rush out and get the oft-rumored WiFi Q, that wouldn’t be enough of an improvement.
But I do have my eye on the non-slider WinMo Pro 6.1 with QWERTY keyboard. I’d like the features of the touch screen but still want a front facing keyboard that isn’t a slider.
Something like that would be enough of a feature boost to get me to part with my cash.
I’m an every 20 months (the Verizon “new every 2″ policy) guy. I don’t even think too much about it until those 20 months go by. Basically, I am waiting for AT&T to improve coverage near the places I tend to spend time, and will probably switch to an iPhone if and when that happens. For me, that means next August I’m looking again.
I am exactly the same way! I get excited to try out a new phone and usually get the coolest one out there (at great expense)…then go back to my Cingular 8125. I’ve tried a few different Nokias, the Samsung i760 which I had to switch to Verizon for, and ended up back with my 8125. The new Touch Pro looks like it will replace my 8125 when it comes out, though. And then I’ll be waiting for the next one!
I’m actually still hoping for a phone just like the Touch Pro, but with a numeric keypad on the outside as well. With everyone copying the iPhone, looks like I’ll have a looong wait.
Chris — it is called TECHNO-LUST!
And I have a pretty bad case of it myself.
Right now I am using an x51v and an LG phone — I have had a hankering for months for a converged device, but have been reluctant because the x51v is such a capable device. That hasn’t prevented me from drooling over the TILT, as well as all of the sexy new phones out there…
I think your reverting back to the Tilt is just your rational mind taking over again — until some curvaceous powerhouse comes along that blows the Tilt out of the water!
the more we are involved in something, oftentimes the more we appreciate it. you run a mobile phone blog - don’t be surprized if you get excited by the phones you write about. you have a professional interest in these devices - to stay contextually up to date on this subject you cover. at least you can tell yourself that if it helps. :-)
Do I need a new phone? No, twice, I have a treo 750 and a 8125 both of which I like very much for different reasons. I want a tilt but they are out of refurbs right now. I am tempted by the 3g iphone but don’t like the overwhelming control that apple has on there stuff. I agree with the above poster who calls it Techno-lust. Only finances limit how many devices I have.
I am always cruising for a new phone, I can’t help myself. It’s like Fred Flintstone and his quest for the perfect bowling ball.
However, I am very happy with my Moto Q and have been for nearly 2 years now. I will stick with it until my provider comes out with one of the newer Qs, or something comparable with a QWERTY and Wifi (the only feature I really really want added to what I have).
at&t restocked the tilt refurbs and I ordered one. I hope I like it as much as everyone else does. We’ll see.
