How are we doing?

questionmark One thing that is great about running my sites as a hobby and not having to worry about income, pressure from sponsors or corporate ownership is that we can do what we want, say what we want, and cover what we want. Of course this is how I do things here on the Mobilitysite front page. If I find it to be interesting, I post about it. You will see my focus sway with what’s hot or my flavor of the month. The other contributors are the same. Look at Frank (Ctitanic)… He posts about what he like, UMPC. The diversity of the contributors we’ve put together make it great for those that might not like what I like, but do like what Frank like. You may not like to see a software review, but you might enjoy Jack’s latest Bluetooth review.

One thing that I did learn in the early years of Aximsite and in my opinion, one things that made Aximsite so successful was user feedback. I would often take user feedback and act on it. What use is a community if it doesn’t allow for feedback, right? So, here I am asking for this feedback today.

I urge you to take the time out to post a comment to let us know what you like or don’t like. What do you want to see more or less of? Thanks again.

  1. I know this has been discussed before but I still believe that replies (like this one) to the Mobilitysite blog stories should be allowed in the forum section, not just at the end of the story.

  2. I like the diversity of topics. While I’m currently focused on my Tilt, I do like to read about what else is going on. One thing I do find a little annoying is the current review “pinned” to the top of the main page. It may just be me, but when I load the page the first story comes up and I can start reading the first couple of lines and then it gets moved off screen as the “pinned” review takes it’s place. I have to scroll down and find my place again. My suggestion is to have the review replaced by just a one line link to it rather than the first few paragraphs.

  3. Thanks drowe, good suggestion.

Buzz - Man, I totally agree with that. We have discussed it and nothing has changed to find a way to do that and not have it be two different discussions. The developer that helped me with the script to share users from Wordpress and vbulletin has stopped supporting. I am going to vow to look into a way to mesh the comments that come from the blog and forums together.

  4. I visit Mobilitysite frequently. Chris, you are RIGHT ON about the variety of the posts — that is one thing that I thoroughly enjoy. I very much appreciate the skill and expertise of the contributors.

Things I use frequently: reviews, forum discussions, quick searches to find a product or topic, and the New Posts button. I do not visit the Gallery, Downloads or Resources much, but I do check out the shopping and discount links when I am in the market for new software or hardware.

I am still in the mode of trolling through the forums — I really liked the older format of responding to front page posts directly in the forums. I am not crazy about the blogging feature — I too would prefer to have ONE mode of conversation rather than two.
At the same time, I can see the practical difference between news/blog items and forum items. There have been very few times that I have reponded to a product announcement, whereas most of my posts are to the “howto’s” of the forums.

Exceptions to this are contests, reviews, and howto’s that get posted on the main page.

I too find the displacement of the first article when the page loads annoying. It would not be bad if it didn’t show me the first article and then take it away with the pinned article. For me, having a pinned article is not important, as I scroll down through the entire page no matter what!!

I look forward to the eventual return of Mobility Site Minute - have always enjoyed that podcast. Before this last hiatus, you were doing interviews with contributors and others in the field of mobile computing. That was fun, but I am sure it added a lot of time to the prep. I always found that you yourself had plenty to say, Chris — so don’t hesitate to simply reincarnate that solo act!

  5. I think Chris, that 4 comments to your post speaks for itself.
You have asked a very important question, yet very few have responded.
Try posting it directly in the forum section and see how many replies you get.
Some people just don’t like blogs,
    or are unfamiliar with them,
or don’t see the article because it doesn’t keep getting bumped to the top.
I’ve noticed that there have been over 1000 new registered users in the last week or so, I’m not sure if that is about average, but you must be doing something very right.

  6. I like your honest, very helpful reviews and unboxing videos. I visit your site regularly to check in and see what’s new…but I also like to watch those videos. The only thing I would have wanted to see more of is more topics, but it appears things have really picked up in the past few weeks. Thanks!

  7. In the past I like the fact that I could get the broad vision(mobilitysite) and the detailed focus (aximsite) for my x50. Now that I have the Mogul, I wish there was a site for the mogul that is the equivalent of the aximsite. The broadness of the mobility site is done well. Varied, informed, funny, respectful and dependable come to mind.

  8. Chris, I realize that you need to make money somehow, but the Intellitxt style ads are one of the most annoying things in the history of the web. The last thing that I want to see when I am trying to scroll through a post is something suddenly pop up over the text, obscuring what I am reading, and - worse - start to make noise! Reading your site late at night while my family sleeps suddenly turns me into a pain in the rear.

There must be another way to get revenue than that, and I hope that you choose that and dump the intellitxt junk. I suppose that I could switch to FireFox and use AdBlock, but I’d really rather not. And I can assure any of the advertisers who pop up - if you annoy me, I will not buy your stuff.
