MSI Wind – Genius or Dunce?
Well, supposedly tomorrow is going to be the big day for the MSI Wind U100. June 27th is supposed to be it’s release date in the US and the UK to follow July 1st (though some reports have the European release delayed until September). Over the last few weeks the Wind has risen to the top of many people’s UMPC Wish List, mainly due to excellent pre-release reviews, good specs, an Atom CPU and a rock bottom low price…plus the tantalizing fact it would beat most of it’s key competitors to market in the US.
However, they have already delayed from the June 17th date…and then announced that only the model with the 3 cell battery will be released in June. The 6 cell version will be released..umm..sometime later. If they fail to meet the June 27th, it could be a major blow to MSI’s aspirations of coming up big in the emerging UMPC/Netbook space. If they get this right, they can beat Asus, Dell and Acer all to shelf space. Of course, the HP 2133 Mininote is out, but to decidedly mixed reviews.
So what do you think? Will tomorrow be MSI’s watershed moment…or their Waterloo?
UPDATE: Fear and Loathing in the msiwind.net Forums? It appears that several Wind enthusiasts who preordered their devices directly from MSI are being told by MSI’s CS reps that there “may” be an unspecified delay…and they are sharing the dirt in the msiwind.net forum. In emails to said customers they are dancing fast to avoid confirming that the units will actually go out the door tomorrow. Bad tidings indeed if you are looking forward to getting a Wind. Thanks to Staker in the pocketables.net forum for the heads-up.
