Google Talk—a sign of the times?

My son likes to IM with me using Google Talk as his chat client of choice for some reason. I prefer Windows Live myself, but I accommodate him. At least I did until today. I hadn’t given it much thought, but I was going to be away from my desktop and thought I’d download Google Talk for my WM Pro device. That should be no big deal. I already have Gmail on it, and it’s pretty slick. To my ever-lasting horror, there was no Google Talk for WM. But, as unbelievable as it may seem, it is available for iPhones! Yes, I know that there are some third party applications that will allow you to do Gmail on WM, but shame on Google.

Wow, is this a sign of the times or what? Until now, I was always amused with iPhonies having to make do and play catch up with a dearth of applications. That as powerful an entity as Google would choose to make one of its applications available to iPhones before the Windows Mobile platform is unthinkable.

Is this is a portend of the future, and WM users are going to have to play catch up to the iPhone platform? I don’t know what this world is coming to. It could be we’ll just have to get used to it. Come to think of it, Windows Mobile developers are scurrying to make their applications finger friendly in the iPhone fashion. So, maybe this is a good thing with iPhone helping to raise the bar with innovative technology and a little healthy competition.

However, I’m not ready to switch yet. There are still just too many things you can’t do on an iPhone to make we want one yet.

  1. Don’t, I beg you, give up on WinMo… Do, I suggest, stop using OEM apps; maybe use Mundu IM or Fring; they will work for many different accounts; I have a bunch, and I like being able to chat from within one app :-)

  2. don’t google talk and AIM work together now? you could sign up for AIM and install the AIM mobile beta.

  3. I’ve noticed quite a few mobile applications being introduced to the iPhone only market. It really saddens me that these companies are ignoring the windows mobile user. My inclination is to seek out alternative sites and software. . . if these companies don’t want my mobile business, then I will go elsewhere.

  4. Is it really possible to use Google Talk on an axim - or did I get it wrong ?

  5. Where is all the BlackBerry love??? Blackberry has gtalk for practically all its devices and AIM is on TMo and AT&T has a carrier specific app for AIM, Windows Live, and another, but I forgot what it is! Besides, the BlackBerry operating systems are so much better anyway. Now,I’m not bashing WinMo, just sayin… Plus, for the fashion conscience, RIM is coming out with a touchscreen BlackBerry soon.

  6. I second the Fring recommendation.

  7. There are iPhone exclusive apps because there are only two versions of the phone out there. That has to make life easier for app developement compared to trying to test WinMo apps for the touchscreen/non-touchscreen, qvga/vga/square/wvga, WinMo 6/6.1/5/2003SE wifi/Edge/3G/EVDO devices.

Not to mention the question of how much hardware support the app will have with video acceleration and processor speed & memory.

The iPhone is probably a cakewalk for developers to program for by comparison.
