Thaddeus Computing to Publish iPhone Edition of Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine
Posted by breley on 06/27/08 in General, Press Releases
For those familiar with Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine and who pined for a similar offering for their iPhone, Thaddeus Computing will soon publish a print magazine and a companion web site targeted at iPhone users. Per Thaddeus Computing CEO Hal Goldstein:
“Given the incredible interest in the new iPhone, extending our Smartphone & Pocket PC brand to cover the iPhone and iPod touch is natural for us. We’ve been doing enthusiast mobile computing publications since 1985.
“We look forward to helping users get the most out of their iPhone or iPod touch and have already identified over 100 hidden tips about using built-in software and iTunes. Each issue will cover new software, top accessories, and best Web applications. Our ‘iPhone at Work’ section will assist both professionals and large organizations.”
The premier issue of the iPhone Edition of Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine will be available mid-August on newsstands worldwide, followed by three more iPhone editions in 2009.
Visitors can find editorial contact information, special advertising rates, and a table of contents at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/iphone/mediakit/. Through special arrangement with texterity.com, a Web-based digital version of the premier issue will be viewable for free for anyone with a PC, Mac, or iPhone.
NB: The iPhone Edition will not be sent to Windows Mobile subscribers. However, yearly iPhone Edition subscriptions will be available for $14.99. For the latest information about Thaddeus Computing’s iPhone efforts, including a listing of the best available iPhone Web sites, visit http://pocketpcmag.com/cms/iphone
Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine Seeks Your Input
I feel very honored this year to join the ranks of our very own Julie and warthog, who are both current and prior Board of Expert Judges for Smartphone & Pocket PC Software Awards. This will be a busy summer for us as we sift through loads of excellent software in our respective categories and recognize those companies producing superior software. We’d like your help, though. The Nominations Manager, Werner Ruotsalainen, better known to many as Menneisyys, has along with many of the Board of Experts created the nominations list. This tentative list of nominations of Windows Mobile software is now available for public viewing and commentary.
This is where we’d appreciate your input, from end users and developers alike. By following this link, you can make suggestions to improve the quality of the pool of items to be judged. Your suggestions can be for a new category, un-nominating products you feel are not deserving or even changing the category of a given product. You can also discuss these and other items related to the 2008 awards by stopping by Smartphone & Pocket PC’s Best Software Awards Forum.
If you’d like more information about the awards for this year, go to http://www.pocketpcmag.com/cms/forums/best-software/best-software-awards

Win One of Two Callpod Dragon BT Headsets!
Posted by breley on 06/8/08 in Mobilitysite Contests
If you’re like me, you might well be melancholic about not winning one of the HP HDX Dragon supercalifragilisticexpialidocious laptops from participating sites in the 31 Days of the Dragon sweeps from last month, but never fear! I’ve got a couple of gently-used dragon-titled devices, namely Callpod Dragon Bluetooth headsets that I’m going to give away to two lucky (and hopefully funny) winners. Steve Laser did a fine review that you can peruse to see what he had to say about the unit.
How to win?
Submit an entry with a clean joke of your own creation—a using mobile tech or PDAs as subject material. I’ll pick from the submissions the two funniest jokes and the winners will be the proud owners of a Callpod Dragon BT headset. Easy as pie, right?
Consult your comedy Muses and let the jokes begin!
Official Rules:
- Submit an original joke to this thread
- Material must be mobile tech or PDA-related (and family-friendly)
- One entry per person
- Staff may enter
Deadline for entries is midnight, 6/22/08.

PDAmill RATS!! Game Contest
Posted by breley on 04/30/08 in General, Mobilitysite Contests, Software, Windows Mobile 6, Windows Mobile 6.1
It’s the last day in April, and it’s been a cold, miserable last couple of days in my neck of the woods, so I thought, "Why not brighten things up with a contest?" So, here we are with a contest! Our friends at PDAmill, skilled in the craft of fine mobile games, have been kind enough to provide me with 5 copies of their excellent platform game, RATS!!. I reviewed this game a while back, and it was a blast to play. My oldest boy kept asking to watch me play it on my X51v, so it’s been a family favorite. It was also a Finalist in the Smartphone and Pocket PC Awards for Best Platform Game of 2007, too!
Want to take a shot a winning one for yourself? Here’s all you need to do. Did you notice something odd on Morty’s (that’s the rat above) backpack generator? It’s biohazard symbol. Post below what you think might be powering Morty’s backpack generator that would be biohazardous, and you’ll garner yourself an entry…something like "Leftover Coquille St. Jacques that was left in our hot garage for a week." Winners will be picked from the most creative answers, so there’s no "right" answer I’m looking for. Just keep it clean, please. ;-) Here are the nitty-gritty rules:
- Suggest what’s biohazardous in Morty’s generator backpack in a comment on to this post
- One entry per person
- Staff may enter
Deadline for entries is Thursday, May 8 at 12:00PM

PDAmill Fun Factory Review
Posted by breley on 01/2/08 in Mobilitysite Reviews
Reviewer: breley (Bryan Eley)
Product: PDAmill Fun Factory v1.0
Price: US$14.95
Device tested: Samsung SCH-i760, Windows Mobile 6 OS
All work and no play makes Jack (not to be confused with our own Jack Cook, mind you!) a dull boy, so the good people at PDAmill have devised a way for people at the end of a long work day to, well, do some more work. Wait! Wait! It’s not what you’re thinking. No, it’s not more endless hours of toil, but rather a condensed 5 day work week of 5 unique “jobs” for you to do. No goofing off, though, or you might get a virtual firing from The Boss. Each day at the Fun Factory entails a different job:
Monday - Unscramble pictures as a sort of Graphic Designer in Slider
Tuesday - Quality Control by removing defective toys in Crane
Wednesday - Quality Assurance by matching identical items in Memory
Thursday - Logistics by directing shipments to their destinations in Selector
Friday - Environmental Remediation by popping Balloons (it prevents animals from devouring released balloons)

Hop on over here to the JAMM blog to see what he said and why he picked the freeware he did, then decide for yourself if you’d like to go out and take them for a spin yourself! Since they’re all free, what have you got to lose?
