Napster and Ericsson Launch Mobile Music Service for UK’s Leading Wireless Carrier — O2 UK

image Napster and Ericsson today announced the launch of the Napster Mobile music service with O2 UK, the leading wireless carrier serving the UK market with more than 18 million subscribers.

Co-developed by Napster and Ericsson, Napster Mobile is a premium music service offering an array of features and content. O2 UK customers will be able to search, browse, preview, purchase and play full-length tracks from Napster’s massive catalog of more than 5 million songs. Napster Mobile also offers dual-delivery for simultaneous downloads to a subscriber’s PC and mobile phone, a unique feature that provides users the convenience of downloading songs directly to their phones with a high-fidelity copy of the song available to download on their PCs.

The service also features a recommendation tool and access to Napster’s expert programming on the handset, including featured artists and top tracks.

Ericsson launches new multimedia solution that gives consumers a new communication experience

image Ericsson launched the Ericsson Multimedia Communication Suite (MCS) - bringing to consumers popular services they already enjoy on the Internet in a new and enhanced mobile way. The intuitive user interface will be integrated into selected new Sony Ericsson devices such as the W760.

With the Ericsson MCS, mobile operators will be able to offer their customers a suite of attractive services. Consumers will be able to access new and existing services from the address book - with an interface including rich presence functionality such as avatars, photos and personal free text. The solution also keeps track of friends and their applications so consumers will always see who is available for different applications. The user has full control over what type of information is available.

The Internet has evolved from being mainly information and content oriented to becoming more communication and people related. Through extensive consumer research done by Ericsson ConsumerLab in Europe, Asia and USA, there are clear signs that communication services on the Internet, like communities, blogs, instant messaging etc, are also demanded in a mobile context. Our study shows that enriched communication services like chat, sending files and presence on the mobile phone, are of very great interest to consumers.

Ericsson and Texas Instruments to Co-develop Innovative 3G Solutions for Handset Manufacturers

NEF016LOGO Ericsson and Texas Instruments Incorporated announced today that the companies will form a strategic technology engagement to develop custom solutions for new Open OS enabled 3G devices. 

Solutions from the technology created by the two companies will combine small and power efficient 3G modems from Ericsson Mobile Platforms with high-performance OMAP applications processors from TI. Solutions from the joint engagement will include OMAP, custom basebands and connectivity technologies and will be capable of supporting the major Open OS, which offer easy access to a rich array of applications and services. The result of this joint effort will enable all device manufacturers to offer advanced Open OS handsets for both the high-end and the rapidly growing mid-range market. 

The collaboration between Ericsson and TI will enable handset manufacturers to deliver the exciting mobile entertainment and multimedia experiences that consumers around the world are increasingly demanding. Ericsson’s access technology leadership, current HSPA-enabled platforms, and future HSPA evolution and LTE technologies, combined with the cutting-edge multimedia performance enabled by TI’s OMAP 2, OMAP 3 and future generations of OMAP processors, will continue to push the performance boundaries of mobile devices and mobile entertainment features.
