HTC Diamond Keyboard Hacked and Available…

HTC_Touch_Diamond_Keyboard1Well, in less than a week, a user over at XDA Devs has already hacked the Diamond’s rom and extracted the new soft keyboard. This one is somewhat iPhone-ish and there are others out there that are available as well, but if you want the hacked one strait from the HTC Diamond, you’ll have to head over to XDA Devs.

I have not tried this, nor do I think I will, but apparently Malatesta at WM Experts has and he offers a couple tips…

  • install is a bit slow, but normal
  • default language is Italian (change to English in settings)

Here is a cab I created and AllTheWay just tested. It should work fine. It will ask you to reset your device and then it will give you 3 new KB layouts. Touch Diamond Keyborad, Touch Diamond Keypad and Touch Diamond Qwerty. Hope you guys like it.

HTC Shift Photos

Yes, I know what you are saying… “There are already tons of photos of the Shift online, why more?” Yes, but these photos are special. What makes them so? They are mine and not someone else’s.

So, I got a chance to use the HTC Shift for a couple days before forwarding our review unit on to Steven Borders to review and I have to say that I am still in love with it.

Read on for some more photos…

It’s all in the eye of the beholder …

There will be a number of official accessories for the new diamond and the folks at Tracy and Matt’s Blog got a photo of the official desktop cradle.  It looks really nice but then I saw a picture of the iPhone over at Engadget Mobile and I started to think about the design.  When the iPhone first came out it looked pretty slick but as I look at the Diamond, it is very definitely slick!  Sort of makes the iPhone look passe.

The Diamond vs. iPhone

The folks at Engadget Chinese were able to get some comparison shots of the Diamond and the iPhone and it looks pretty good.  I think it may well be a “contender”!

O2 Xda diamond - A Quick Look

Arne Hess from the::unwired got a hold of a pre-production unit and has some pictures and brief thoughts that you might like.  In part, Arne said:

Like HTC’s version, also O2’s smartphone features a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera without flash on the back and in the upper right corner on the front a VGA video telephony camera which can be used for self-portraits as well. Unfortunately there’s no hardware shutter button for the camera anymore which means you either have to start the camera from the Start menu or from HTC’s TouchFLO 3D Today screen UI.

HTC Shift Video 1st Look

Ever since CTIA Wireless at a dinner with HTC where they showed the Shift, I have really been excited to get some serious hands on time with it. You see, we were able to play with, but not change anything, take photos, or anything else fun with the Shift at this dinner. Now, it’s playtime. Unfortunately, I have decided to let Steven Borders give us the full spin. Not unfortunate for you guys though, Steven will do a great job working the Shift into the automotive work force. I will take some time to test it out on my end for the next day or two though.

Here is my  video 1st look at the HTC Shift…

HTC Touch Diamond Video Demos

HTC has uploaded a handful of videos to YouTube demonstrating the HTC Touch Diamond. Here are a couple of them…

HTC Touch Diamond Announced Today

As expected, HTC announced the HTC Touch Diamond today in London. I mentioned the leaked specs yesterday and they look very nice except on thing, the battery. 900mah? I sure hope HTC stumbled into some new battery consumption method that uses far less juice.

HTC Touch Diamond - OMG

OMG is all I can say looking at these specs that have leaked over the weekend. It’s now apparent that the May 6th event in London is not about Android as some, including myself, expected. It seems that this device might be what is in store. You might wonder why HTC is having such a big event for a single device, but may I remind you that Sandisk had a HUGE Hollywood event for the release of their 8GB MicroSD card. Phones are serious business for HTC. :)

htc-touch-diamond

Check out these rumored specs… Very nice.

  • 2.8-inch VGA display
  • WinMo 6.1 Pro
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
  • eGPS, FM tuner
  • Quad-band HSDPA 7.2
  • 4GB internal flash, microSD slot
  • 528MHz CPU
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus
  • 10.7mm (0.47-inches) thick
  • Supposedly also features an orientation sensor / accelerometer

This thing is going to need a 2500mah battery to make it a day I fear. Since I can’t see any indication of a keyboard here, I can’t get too excited for my own personal needs, but it does look quite nice for those that don’t rely on a qwerty keyboard.

Set your fingers free, HTC!

So, we all know that HTC has been instrumental in the Windows Mobile World with their great, high quality phones right? Well, most of us “can” agree on that I am sure. Typically, HTC has let the cell providers rebrand their phones and get the glory. Times are changing…

HTC is now celebrating a tad bit of self recognition now. The name is pretty much synonymous with Windows Mobile Phones even if you don’t know that your phone was made by HTC. I’d be willing to bet that a large percentage of AT&T Tilt users don’t know that HTC makes their phone.  HTC is launching a national TV ad campaign today…

This national campaign will highlight a variety of iconic devices that HTC is known for – i.e. touch screen devices, sliding and tilt QWERTY keyboards, etc.  But, the overall premise is to create brand awareness and excitement for HTC, rather than focusing on just one device.  The campaign shows the various phases of life and how one’s life intersects with their HTC device.

Read on for a sneak peak at their 1st commercial. I have to say that it’s somewhat Zune’ish, but it’s still good.

What is Coming May 6th from HTC? gPhone?

sl-pm-ib Speculations are running rampant all over the blogosphere this week about invitations to an HTC Event in London on May 6th… “Witness the next wave of HTC Innovation” What else could it mean really? It’s got to be their version of the Google Android thingy, right? That sure seems to be what most are thinking at least. Slash Phone thinks so too…

It’s hard to say what HTC is unveiling. With Apple’s Worldwide Developers convention just a month away, I’d venture to guess that HTC would introduce their first Android phone – the Dream. This is actually the perfect time frame since HTC committed to a release date of mid-2008 release or at least an announcement of a device sporting Android.

We shall see!

T-Mobile Replacing Batteries for Wing

It appears that T-mobile is replacing batteries for the T-mobile Wing.  Deiter, from WM Experts got one of these replacements last week while he was at CTIA. I think this shows great commitment to quality. Sure, there shouldn’t be any issues to start with, but fixing them so easily is quite commendable.  I don’t know who to cheer, T-mobile or HTC.

Golly, whilst away at CTIA, we received a package we weren’t expecting. Inside, a brand new battery manufactured by Celxpert to replace our stock Dynapack battery. Also inside, an explanation:

T-Mobile and HTC are providing a replacement for the T-Mobile Wing battery made by Dynapack at not charge to you due to rare occurrences of the battery overheating.
