MWC: HP and Qualcomm to Deliver Options for Worldwide Internet Access

image HP and Qualcomm today announced that they are working together to incorporate Qualcomm’s Gobi TM global mobile Internet technology in select 2008 HP business notebooks to enable high-speed connectivity on 3G UMTS HSPA / EV-DO networks with a single wireless solution.

Gobi technology enhances HP notebook customers’ choice of mobile operators and will help increase international roaming capabilities(1). With a multi-mode Gobi powered HP notebook and an activated carrier service, customers benefit from multiple connection options to the latest network technologies and enhanced capabilities for increased connectivity.

image “Qualcomm and HP have long been working together to improve the end-user experience,” said Mike Concannon, vice president of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “With the integration of Gobi technology into HP notebooks, the two companies bring unparalleled connectivity to notebook users, enabling them to access the Internet without having to search for a Wi- Fi hotspot. Together the companies continue to meet market needs for mobility.”

Gobi technology will be offered on a range of 2008 HP notebook products, including ultra-portable, balanced mobility and performance categories. The addition of Gobi technology allows customers to access wireless networks capabilities beyond a Wi-Fi network to stay connected on various network technologies1.

Upcoming Verizon’s Windows Mobile Phones

No surprise here. Just 4 days ago, we posted Verizon’s November 2007 Lineup. The only thing I don’t see anything in the press release(after the break) is info about the Motorola Q9c.

The new phone that is unlike any you’ve seen released before is the Samsung sgh-i760. I 1st got a peek at this one back at CES 2007, over 10 months ago. When CTIA came around in March, they were hiding it… now, it’s a few days away from release. The i760 will cost $350 after $50 mail-in rebate and two-year contract.

The Samsung i760 is a Windows Mobile 6 Pocket PC Phone with a slide out qwerty keyboard. It has 128mb ROM/ 64mb RAM. A 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and WiFi.

The UTStarcom XV6800 has WiFi and Bluetooth, a slide out keyboard and is also a Pocket PC Phone running Window Mobile 6 Pro. A funny thing is that this is the same as another rumor from LAST YEAR. ( link )

The Palm Treo 755p is running the Palm OS and has a 320×320 screen, Bluetooth, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. It will finally hit Verizon?

The UTStarcom SMT5800 should be the same as the Qwest Fusion, which is basicly the HTC Libra. The Libra is the CDMA version of the HTC Vox. The funny thing is that the slide shows it running Windows Mobile 6 Standard, but the photo shows Pro on the screen. I would be willing to bet that it’s not a touch screen. 128mb ROM and 64mb RAM. It is to have a 2 megapixel camera and Bluetooth 2.0.

Federal Circuit Court of Appeals Grants Stay Allowing Import of Third Party Handsets into the United States

image Qualcomm has announced that the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit granted a stay pending appeal that will allow third parties to import handsets into the United States originally banned by the International Trade Commission (ITC).

The stay applies to all third parties that filed motions seeking a stay of the limited exclusion order imposed by the ITC on June 7, 2007. Those parties were Kyocera Wireless Corporation, Motorola, Inc., Samsung Electronics Corporation, Ltd., Sanyo Fisher Co., T-Mobile USA, Inc., LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc., and AT&T Mobility LLC. The ITC had imposed the importation ban as a remedy after finding that Qualcomm had infringed a patent held by Broadcom relating to a power-saving technique.

Broadcom had filed the complaint in the ITC against only Qualcomm, leading Qualcomm and the third parties that are “downstream users” to argue that the ITC lacked the authority to issue an order excluding products imported by persons other than Qualcomm. In granting the stay, the Federal Circuit agreed that the third parties demonstrated “a substantial case on the merits and that the harm factors weigh in their favor.” The Federal Circuit declined to grant a stay with respect to Qualcomm’s own imports. Qualcomm does not itself import the chips found to infringe Broadcom’s patents.

“We are pleased that the Court of Appeals recognized the undeserved harm to parties who were not named in the lawsuit, and that our customers will continue to be able to introduce new products into the U.S. marketplace during the appeals process,” said Alex H. Rogers, senior vice president and legal counsel, Qualcomm.

Qualcomm will continue to pursue the appeal of the ITC’s order with the Federal Circuit and seek a reversal of the underlying infringement finding.

Interactive Mobile TV

image Qualcomm announced today that it has joined forces with conVISUA to demonstrate live user interactivity with televised programming on the MediaFLO platform. Marking an industry milestone, this demonstration showcases interactivity applications tightly integrated with televised programming over a mobile broadcast network. The MediaFLO demonstration with conVISUAL shows how consumers can seamlessly engage with TV shows broadcast to their MediaFLO-enabled mobile devices. Consumers can view their favorite programs and research reality show stars, participate in polls and quizzes and even chat live with other viewers — all without any interruption in programming.

Using conVISUAL’s interactive TV platform and the interactive features of the MediaFLO System, the proof-of-concept demonstration will showcase live SMS events sent to mobile viewers via MediaFLO IP datacasting that are tightly integrated with the storylines of globally recognized television programs. Using a split screen, viewers can watch TV while participating with the televised content and other viewers using SMS. conVISUAL’s servers process the SMS traffic in real time and display information such as poll results and chat sessions right on the mobile device using MediaFLO IP datacasting and an integrated player. This type of interactivity is expected to become a key driver for the next phase of growth in the mobile media sector by allowing broadcasters and mobile operators to offer compelling new mobile TV services to subscribers.
