TomTom Navigator Upgrades to v6.75

TT

I just got a new email from TomTom:

New maps are here
Ever feel the world around you is changing faster than ever? That’s because it is! Each year an average of 15% of roads and 20% of Points of Interest change.
Our latest maps of the US and Canada have have hundreds of thousands of new addresses, and greatly enhanced overall address accuracy, road maneuvers and travel restrictions.

The upgrade now costs $70, where it used to be $50.  Ouch.  They also feature a new service called Map Share, which you receive free for 12 months if you upgrade your maps.  Here’s what Map Share offers:

  • instantly improved maps every day on your TomTom device
  • entry into the world’s largest navigation community
  • the ability to share improvements daily with other TomTom users
  • full control over improvements that are uploaded and downloaded
  • the best and most accurate maps available – always.

TomTom Reveals Revolutionary IQ Routes Technology on New TomTom GO Series

Unique route calculation method provides smartest routing on the market

image TomTom, the world’s largest portable navigation solutions provider, today announces ground-breaking features and unique content on the new TomTom GO range, including its exclusive IQ Routes technology and Advanced Lane Guidance.

The innovative IQ Routes technology is based on actual average speeds measured on roads, rather than posted speed limits. This means that
the new TomTom GO range determines a route by considering all possible
routes and then selecting the one that takes the least time based on recent historical data. In almost 50% of all journeys, this results in a faster
route, and saves significant travel time, fuel, and money.

In addition, the new TomTom GO series includes TomTom’s Advanced Lane
Guidance feature. Advanced Lane Guidance provides users with realistic
representations of complex highway junctions and lane-specific visual
directions that take the stress out of navigating these otherwise difficult
    junctions.

The two new features will be available with the new TomTom GO series,
the TomTom GO 930 and TomTom GO 730, starting at the end of April 2008.

    CES 2008 - TomTom

As always, TomTom had a presence at CES displaying their product line.  I am always amazed at how incredibly busy they are each year at their booth.  Clearly, they have a very popular and great product.  If you missed our review of TomTom 6, you can read the review of this terrific mobile application here:  TomTom 6 – A Near Perfect Navigation Solution

Their display showed almost most all of their product line (the mobile application was not there) but you really had a great feel for what the application can do by looking at the what was there.  I did like the TomTom Rider!

TomTom announces the TomTom ONE XL-S

TomTom revealed the TomTom ONE XL-S today. The new TomTom ONE XL-S is the first product in the TomTom ONE XL range to offer text- to-speech technology, enabling street names and places to be read aloud as part of the spoken navigation instructions. The TomTom ONE XL-S also offers the exclusive TomTom Map Share technology and unique ‘HELP ME!’ features on a 4.3 inch screen.

    image

TomTom Map Share is a proprietary map improvement technology that
enables users to easily and instantly improve maps. Via TomTom HOME,
TomTom’s free desktop software application, Map Share users can share
map improvements made by the community of Map Share users — so that
they always have the most up-to-date maps available in the industry. Map
Share users can also respond in real time to changes in the road network and, with just a few simple taps on their screen, can correct the maps on their device accordingly.

The extensive ‘Help Me!’ menu includes information about the nearest car repair service center, police station, or hospital, and allows users to either locate or call the closest emergency service provider no matter where they are. It also allows users to quickly identify their exact location, so that they can provide this information to emergency assistance providers and receive help more quickly.

“The TomTom ONE XL-S brings two great technologies, text-to-speech for spoken instructions and TomTom Map Share for the most up-to-date maps, to our ONE XL platform,” said TomTom Inc president Jocelyn Vigreux. “The TomTom ONE XL-S complements our portfolio and gives our customers even more products to choose from.”

TomTom ONE XL-S will be available starting at the end of October for $399.95 at major retailers across the US and Canada.

Navigation devices set to take mass market route

image Portable navigation devices are poised to take off this holiday shopping season as market leaders Garmin and TomTom race each other to make deeper inroads into the mass market by pushing out cheaper models. The trend for entry-level gadgets will mean lower profit margins for Garmin Ltd and TomTom, but the companies are willing to make that sacrifice to lure consumers and go one up in their intense battle for market share, analysts said.

“Portable navigation devices are becoming a ‘must have’ device for a growing percentage of the population,” JMP Securities analyst Ingrid Ebeling said.

Prices in the portable navigation devices market, worth about 8.5 billion euros ($11.79 billion) this year, have been sliding as Garmin and TomTom make more of their products for ordinary consumers.
