Windows 7 installed in a Gigabyte U60

This (Sp) is the first installation reported of Windows 7 in a Gigabyte U60, a UMPC using a VIA 1.2 GHz processor! First impressions, compared with Windows Tablet PC Edition SP3 (1:05 minutes), Windows 7 boots faster, in around 1:00 minute! In overall, Windows 7 performance in that machine is similar to what the author has seen in Windows Tablet PC 2005 Edition SP3! Really good news!

Chippy emptied his pockets

It’s hard to see Chippy from UMPC Portal really excited with any device. And this is because he has been lucky enough to play with most of them and when you do that you get like vaccinated against those buying impulses that you get when you see something you that you really like. Well, apparently, the vaccine failed and Chippy has bought a Gigabyte M912M sent to him for a review. Why? Lets him tell you about it in this video.

Chippy at UMPCPortal has shot a video review of the Gigabyte M912 mini Tablet.

He will be writing about this machine for a while so keep visiting his page for more information.

Gigabyte M912, EU Pricing and Availability

I don’t know if I should be publishing this after the news of this device not been available for our American readers.  Something hard to digest even 24 hours after I read the news. Anyway… Chippy has some really good news for our European friends about the different models and prices for this device that seem to be one of the best options for this Summer.

Gigabyte M912V won’t see USA territory

Yeah, a real chocking news! I know for fact that many of my friends and readers here in USA where waiting for this netbook to be released here in USA to buy it. Well, the good news is that at least European are going to see soon.

The Gigabyte representative writes, "I am sorry, but this product will not be released in the US/Canada Market. It will only be available in Asia and Europe."

Gigabyte M912 Available in July

2540376813_fd352a1ab6 jkOnTheRun is reporting that the much anticipated 8.9 inch UMPC Tablet PC from Gigabyte, the M912, will finally see the light of US retail in July. The swivel touch screen immediately puts this on on my “Potential purchase” radar since I love the concept of being able to switch a UMPC from Mini-laptop mode to tablet PC mode. The M912 joins devices from Kohjinsha in the very narrow touchscreen UMPC niche.

Looking at the form factors of the two styles of devices, I like the fact that the smaller Kohjinshas have mouse controls alongside the screen for use when the screen is covering the keyboard, but from what I understand the Kohjinsha does not run Tablet PC software, rather being just a XP/Vista UMPC with a very limber touchscreen. The ability to run as a proper tablet gives a tremendous advantage to the Gigabyte model (as does the larger screen) and should mitigate the physical controls alongside the smaller Kohjinsha screen. Another plus is that the Gigabyte should be available more widely in the US, while Kohjinsha devices are only available in the US through Dynamism or other top-dollar Japanese geekcandy importers.

The impressive specs are as follows:

  • Atom 1.6GHz processor
  • Intel 945GSE chipset
  • 1GB DDR2 RAM
  • 160GB HDD
  • 8.9”LCD panel/WXGA 1280×768, w/Touch screen, LED Backlight, as 180° rotation angle
  • 80 key keyboard
  • 3x usb ports, dual 1.5 watt speakers
  • 1.3mp webcam
  • Bluetooth, 802.11b/g wireless
  • Li-ion 4500mAh, Battery life 3.5 hrs
  • Windows XP, Vista Home Basic or Linux (for full Tablet PC support, you need the Vista model)

No word yet if the RAM is upgradable but for running Vista Tablet, I would like 2G please. Also, 802.11n would have been a nice touch on a high end machine.

The price point of $699 is not surprising but in the upper reaches for the UMPC market…and no word on if the Linux version will be discounted. Still, this looks to be a top of the line unit with the addition of the tablet capability, so many buyers may view this as not an overpriced UMPC but a budget Tablet PC.

Gigabyte M912V

20080704155147233Gigabyte is going to surprise us with a new netbook running Vista this Summer.

Featuring a 8.9-inch WXGA touch screen display that can be rotated 180 degrees to transform into a tablet pc, the M912V adopts 160GB SATA HDD, a 1.3M camera and LED backlight. 4GB SSD and HSDPA support are optional.

No words at Aving USA about what processor will be using this machine. I just hope that it’s a Core Solo… at least.

Finally some real pictures of the Gigabyte’s new M700 UMPC

gigabyte-m700-top-1Engadget has just posted some real pictures of the M700 from Gigabyte. With 2 GB and that 1,2 VIA processor this device is a fair competitor for the latest FIASCO of Intel called Atom which performance is a lot worse than a Celeron M at 900 MHz according to the latest numbers that I have in my hands.

The M700 (pictured) is a tad more ambitious, with a VIA C7-M 1.2GHz processor, Windows Vista Home Premium, 2GB of RAM, a 1.8-inch 40GB / 60GB HDD and a 1024 x 600 7-inch touchscreen. There’s no hardware keyboard, but you can type via a UMPC-style software keyboard, and real kicker here is a dock for the computer that lets the M700 power a desktop setup, complete with disc drive. No word on price or release date for either of these.

Gigabyte M700 UMPC unveiled at CeBit

gigabyte-m700-468Wow, this is a really good looking design and technically is not bad at all.

Just unveiled at CeBit, Gigabyte’s M700 UMPC comes with a surprising 2 GB RAM. In addition to its hefty memory and bright design, the M700 manages to pack in a 7-inch, 1024×600 touchscreen and a 1.2 GHz Via C7-M processor. It also has Windows Vista Home Premium. Details on pricing and release are hush hush at this point.
