LAPTOP Magazine reviews the HTC Shift X9000

LAPTOP Magazine has a FULL review on the HTC Shift CDMA version, aka HTC X9000:

“Ultra-Mobile PC” has become somewhat of a dirty word this past year, especially as lower-cost, mini laptops like the Eee PC have captured the imagination (and wallets) of hundreds of thousands of customers. The HTC Shift X9000, the smart phone maker’s first stab at a full Windows machine, is different, however.

This $1,499 system is a bona fide mobile computer that tries to shed the UMPC stigma by offering push e-mail via mobile broadband for up to three days on a charge, as well as a unique slide-and-tilt display that reveals a keyboard. And with new Origami 2.0 software on board, surfing the Web with your finger is a pleasure. The Shift X9000 is certainly innovative, but is it worth the high price even for those executives who can afford it?

Great, Good, Bad and Ugly: Matt Miller gives us his thoughts on the HTC Shift

Matt Miller, The Mobile Gadgeteer has had the HTC Shift over a week and has over 140 photos and screenshots in his extensive image gallery.

image

He has had a chance to try out most all aspects of the device. He has a brief outline if his thoughts categorized into GREAT, GOOD, BAD, and UGLY.

For a tidbit of what his thought are. here are the GOOD and BAD (you will have to check his blog post to find out the GREAT and UGLY!

Good

  • Sprint EV-DO connectivity is a nice bonus
  • Biometric scanner offers good security
  • No bloatware loading of apps is awesome
  • Integrated Secure Digital card slot is nice (when will Apple learn this?)
  • Nice leather case included with device
  • Included USB hub and ethernet is helpful
  • Small A/C adapter is a thoughtful feature
  • Origami Experience 2.0 is useful
  • 1GB included RAM is adequate

Bad

  • Stylus is poor since it doesn’t stay extended when pulled out
  • 1024×600 software resolution is fuzzy and not good for text entry or viewing
  • Can’t remove leather case if you want to travel a bit lighter
  • Vista is too much for the device
  • No recovery CDs are included
  • No portrait mode for eBook reading, etc
  • No storage card in SnapVUE, hyperlinks go nowhere, call support appears in menus, but are not supported while text nessaging is supported
  • Skype is unusable, audio is shaky and video is virtually non-existent

Go to The Mobile Gadgeteer to check out the photos. I’ll keep an eye on the site and let you know when he has his full review up!

Enjoy Windows Mobile on your Shift!

MoDaCo shows you how to Liberate your HTC Shift!

I like my Shift. It has some obvious failings (such as the pretty horrible battery life) and also the ‘crippled’ Snapvue, which is really a locked down Windows Mobile 6 with bits removed. Wouldn’t it be great if you could Liberate SnapVue by making it full WinMo 6, and then installing as normal? Wouldn’t it be great if this was made really easy? Wouldn’t it be great perhaps if the process was demo’d on video? Wouldn’t it be great if the software you really wanted was bundled up into easy to use ‘packs’?

Well you can now do that because Paul from  MoDaCo has the solution for you and it’s called SHIFTpack.Liberate and SHIFTpacks!

Installing WM programs on HTC Shift

An XDA-developers user has found a way to access the C Drive from “WM6″ and also install any program in that cut down version of WM6 installed in the HTC Shift.

I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.

Bravo!

Holy Shift!! The Shift is soon to land in the UK!

Back in March 2007, I got a chance to play with the HTC Shift at an exclusive dinner with HTC. Myself and the others in attendance were floored at this device. We weren’t allowed to take photos, etc… In the last few months though, the Shift has shifted into the hands of many to look at and all that I have seen has been positive.

Moving forward and almost a year later,  Reg Hardware is reporting that Expansys is set to ship these soon (Feb 17th) and that we might see it offered for sale through Orange as well.

The Shift, which first appeared almost a year ago and was due to go on sale in November 2007, will be available from online retailer Expansys on 19 February, for a device-only price of £885 (€1185/$1720).

Separately, bloggers Tracy and Matt claim to have seen a copy of Orange’s retailer-oriented February pricebook, which apparently reveals that the network operator will offer an own-brand version of the UMPC in March.

HTC Shift Finally approved by FCC

I don’t want to give false hope, but it looks like we might finally see the HTC Shift coming soon now. Today, I caught a post over on Unwired View showing that the HTC Shift is approved by the FCC now.

Today the external photos and users manual for Clio 100 became public. It leaves no doubt, that Clio 100 is in fact HTC Shift UMPC for GSM/HSDPA networks.

Let’s hope for a speedy launch HTC.

Pringle Shows us how useful the HTC Shift is

I have been in love with the HTC Shift since I first got my hands on one this past March at CTIA. The launch has lingered a bit and now it’s coming at such an inopportune time for me. With 2 kids and a lovely wife, and Christmas looming near, I can drop that sort of cash right now unfortunately.

Have no fear, Craig Pringle shows us the joy of the HTC Shift and why it’s such a cool device. In my opinion, it’s really a cross between an AT&T Tilt, a Tablet PC, and a UMPC. Very HTC Advantage like when used in “mini laptop” mode. I know that Mobilitysite/Aximsite reviewer Badersk will have his hands on one sooner or later, but I gotta get my Shift on soon!

Enjoy, and thanks for sharing Craig…
