Kohjinsha SC3 Review
Poketables.net has published the first full review of the Kohjinsha SC3. The photos are just incredible good. Two things that gained my attention, performance is about the same I have in my old Q1 Celeron at 900 MHz with 2 GB of RAM running Vista and the battery life is about 2.5 hours using WiFi. The Q1P with a Pentium M at 1 GHz had that same performance and Battery Life. did you get my point Intel? Anyway… I’m glad to see that the new generation of Atom processors is at least coming back to that performance we had 2 years ago.
Kohjinsha SC3 Hands-On
Posted by Zealot on 07/16/08 in Kohjinsha, UMPC, Ultra Mobiles
One of the devices I have been lusting after the most of late, the new Kohjinsha SC3, is the topic of a very comprehensive and informative review by Jenn at Pocketables.net. The device (straight out of Japan and largely unavailable in the US except through Conics or Dynamism) boasts the impressive combination of a 7 inch swivel touch screen coupled with an Atom processor running Vista. It is not cheap by any means, but it is small and powerful, and certainly eyecatching.
Specs for the little wonder are as follows:
- CPU:1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 (Silverthorne)
- Chipset: Intel SCH US15W (Poulsbo)
- RAM: 1GB DDR2-533, upgradeable
- OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
- Storage: 60GB HDD
- Display: 7” swiveling touchscreen (1024 x 600)
- Wireless: 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, GPS, 1seg tuner
- Size: 7.44″ x 6.10″ x 1.00″-1.30″
- Weight: 1.76 lbs.
- Colors: Black or white
Jenn is not a pushover when it comes to reviewing new tech, but she was very impressed with the device across the board with only a few minor caveats, saying:
The Kohjinsha SC3 has come such a long way from the original SA1 series from 2006 that it’s hard to believe they’re actually related. Everything the SA1 did wrong, the SC3 does right . . . and then some! It looks fantastic, is more compact than any other 7-inch UMPC around, has an excellent keyboard and a good selection of ports/features, and performs well under Vista. Battery life is a bit lacking and the unit gets very warm after a bit of use, but all things considered, there is very little to complain about.
If this is what we can expect from all Menlow-based devices, then there’s definitely a lot to look forward to.

Kohjinsha SC3 Unboxing
Here is a short video showing the "unboxing" of a Kohjinsha SC3, another wonderful UMPC or netbook that will never see the USA Territory.
Kohjinsha’s SR8KPO6S UMPC makes room for optical drive
According to news published today in Engadget, a version of the Kohjinsha UMPC with an optical drive will be released at the end of this month.
this 7-incher includes a full-fledged dual-layer DVD writer, which tags along nicely with the 1,024 x 600 resolution LED-backlit panel, 1.3-megapixel camera, 60GB hard drive, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth and 800MHz A110 processor. It’s also filled with 1GB of DDR2 RAM, Ethernet, a duo of USB 2.0 ports, VGA output, audio in / out, 3-in-1 multicard reader and a pair of battery options promising 3.5 / 7.2 hours of life. The 2.4-pound machine looks to be available at the end of this month.
The Kohjinsha is a convertible UMPC that with all these options added weights around 2.4 pounds. 0.4 more than the initial concept for UMPC where the maximum weight should has been less than 2 pounds. Add to that the extended battery and probably will end close to 3 pounds. So… It’s a matter of weight against options or functionality. Nobody is perfect. For myself I would go with anything less than 2 pounds. I do need the keyboard, the mouse, neither the DVD so why I should carry them fixed to my UMPC if I can have external ones attached in case I need any of them. To me UMPC is all about mobility and a key point in mobility is weight.

First UMPC with DVDROM integrated
Kohjinsha has began to market in Korea it’s model SR8KP06 which includes a integrated DVDROM becoming in this way in the first one to do that. May be for some users to have a integrated DVDROM is something that they can’t live without it. To me, it’s a waste of space and an extra weight to carry. I like more the idea of having a external DVDROM drive that I can carry when ever I need only.
Kohjinsha SH6WP10A User Review at TabletPCReview
Posted by ctitanic on 10/15/07 in Kohjinsha, UMPC, Ultra Mobiles
Here is what TabletPCReview has to say about the Kohjinsha SH6WP10A UMPC powered with an Intel A100 processor:
I would recommend this to anyone wanting to get a UMPC because this thing can be a regular laptop, then switch to a Tablet PC in a second. If you like videos, iTunes, Internet surfing and typing, this computer is for you. If you like games, intense graphic editing, then this computer really isn’t for you. I used Vista for the review, but decided to switch to Windows XP tablet edition 2005 after and I love it. It’s good on Vista, but it runs better on Windows XP.
I also think that Vista is too much for this little device. XP will run perfectly though Vista is a lot better Operating System for Tablet PCs and UMPCs.
