A new device was announced by HTC and it passed right under our noses… the HTC Max 4G, the first WiMax phone. Recently announced by HTC and it is expected to be released in late November… only … it will be in … Russia! under the Yota carrier.
This dream device sports 4G connectivity to a WiMax service that will provide blazingly fast data connection. It will also include the usual connections for all those aging GSM/GPRS/EDGE carriers out there… The screen is a beautiful WVGA 480 x 800 pixels, 3.8 inches diagonal that we all love from the HTC Touch HD, TouchFLO 3D, accelerometers for auto rotate, proximity for screen auto-turn off (which can heavily extend power management), 288Mb RAM, 256Mb ROM and a whopping 8Gb user available internal storage memory plus the corresponding extension slot for microSDHC.

All they need to do is tie it to your credit card and Al Gore will be able to tax you directly.
Keeping track of your carbon footprint could become as simple as slipping a mobile phone in your pocket: a London-based start-up company has developed software for mobile phones that uses global positioning satellites to work out automatically whether you are walking, driving or flying and then calculate your impact on the environment.
Carbon Diem’s inventors claim that, by using GPS to measure the speed and pattern of movement, their algorithm can identify the mode of transport being used. It can therefore calculate the amount of carbon dioxide that a journey has emitted into the atmosphere – without any need for input from the traveller.
The system’s inventor, Andreas Zachariah, a graduate student of the Royal College of Art in London and chief executive of the Carbon Hero company, said that Carbon Diem is the world’s first automated carbon calculator.
Because it keeps a constantly updated diary of a person’s carbon emissions, Zachariah said that a user can easily track their environmental impact and, if they choose, modify their behaviour to lower-carbon alternatives.
“We’re facilitating people to make little changes and allow those changes to be noted and registered and possibly shared,” he said. “If lots of people realise we’re in this marathon [in tackling climate change] and we’re not running alone, then we actually think people will be motivated to stick to changes.”
Workout - Stay Fit - Make a Charitable Donation
Got a few extra pounds to lose? Do you have that desire to try and help others? Of course you do (we all do) and here is an incredibly neat way for you to do it all.
plus3network is a new site that combines exercise and charity and at the same time will get YOU corporate sponsorship for your everyday exercise activities. Pretty cool, huh? I thought so too! Every walk you take, mountain you climb, bike trail you traverse and mile that you swim will help keep you fit AND earn cash for the charity of your choice.
It is pretty simple to get into this program. You sign up (at NO COST), choose your cause you want to support and start exercising. Plus 3 will find a corporate sponsor for your charity who is willing to make donations for each mile of exercise activity. You just have to record your walking, running, biking or swimming on Plus 3. You can enter information manually or upload GPS data (so I knew you were wondering how this post related to Mobile Devices) that includes the course, the pace, the distance and the date (GPS data earns significantly more for your charity).

Pharos Traveler 117 & Pharos Traveler 127 Announced
Posted by Chris Leckness on 11/12/08 in GPS
My very 1st Bluetooth GPS receiver was from Pharos. It was one of those cool CF/Bluetooth models. I loved it an used it long after “more modern” models came out. Pharos has now drifted into more than just receivers. I wasn’t too fond of their 1st Integrated GPS Phone, but the two newest models that were leaked on Dell.com a while back sure look sexy.
For more info about these visit the 117 and 127 Spec Pages.

Review - OnCourse Navigator 8
Posted by JakeRich on 10/29/08 in GPS, Mobilitysite Reviews
A couple of years ago I reviewed OCN6 and gave it a pretty good rating. Now the folks at OnCourse Navigator have updated the software and maps, and the good news is that a good system is now even better. OCN8 has again raised the bar for routing and mapping applications.
Testing Environment
I tested OCN8 with a Dell Axim X51v with Lenny’s L11 ROM of WM6.1 and with an ETEN Glofiish X610 also running WM6.1. With the Axim I used two different BlueTooth GPS receivers including an i-Blue 757 receiver and a GlobalSat 338. The X51v has been upgraded to 128 Meg of RAM, the X610 has the original 64 Meg.
Installation
Installation is still dead simple. When you buy the system you get a micro-SD card with the software and maps on it, plus a micro-to-mini adapter and a mini-to-SD adapter. The combination allows you to use the system in just about any device that can read any size SD card. The 2 Gbyte card is “straight” SD, the 4Gbyte is SDHC. I tested the 4GB version.

Dash Express Gets Voice Recognition
Posted by Chris Leckness on 09/10/08 in GPS
Today Dash Navigation announced partnerships with leading voice providers Tellme and Dial Directions whose services allow Dash users to wirelessly send information to their cars via their telephones/mobile phones. For the first time, Dash Express users will have voice control of the Dash user interface.
We’re psyched to announce that two leading voice service providers, Tellme and Dial Directions, have leveraged our open platform to extend the Dash experience to the landline or mobile phone. For the first time, our community now has voice control of the Dash user interface. These new voice search and voice address entry features (free!) allow Dash customers to wirelessly send information to their cars via phone.
This is a promo video, but if it works 1/2 this good, it will be super cool!
Google Maps 2.2 is available for Windows Mobile
Back in June, Google released Google Maps Mobile 2.2 for BlackBerry devices only. This week, Google finally released the same update for Windows Mobile and Symbian. This update adds the ability to search for directions using public transit.
They also included the same feature addons in this Windows Mobile release that they included in the BlackBerry release:
You’ll find a number of other features in this new version of Google Maps for mobile for WinMo and S60: star-ratings for businesses will help you get a feel for what other people think, your search results show up faster than ever, and user-generated content will now surface in your search results — opening up a whole new world of geo content on your phone. Look for the blue result markers when you search for "ruins in london," for example.
Even though Google Maps is one of the best free programs for Windows Mobile it doesn’t seem like Google really cares about the Windows Mobile market that much. Back in July Google added the ability to give voice commands to the program rather than needing to type your search queries, but they only released this feature for BlackBerry. Is anyone else starting to see a pattern here?

ATT Tilt / TyTn II vs iPhone 3g Comparison
I don’t know about you guys but personally I’m rather sick of hearing about the ‘wonderful’ iPhone 3g.(and I use the term wonderful loosely..) It’s everywhere you look, it’s the popular thing to talk about and I don’t quite get what it is about this phone that has everyone in such an uproar over?! The first iPhone didn’t come out that long ago, and the new iPhone doesn’t offer that many new features over the old one, sure it has 3G, but that should have been on the first gen phone honestly. I mean Apple got into bed with AT&T, a known 3G provider/carrier but yet the phone doesn’t support it?! That just doesn’t make much sense to me really… Anyway, so the iPhone 3g adds GPS right? No and Yes, and well sort of, the actual usability of the GPS is still in question, and from what I understand it doesn’t provide turn by turn navigation, so if you need or like that feature you’ll have to buy a second device just for navigation. At least for me GPS is mainly for getting directions to help you get where you are going, what good is it to know where you are if you don’t know where to go to get where you’re going?
Continue on to read the rest… it gets interesting!
What sports do you do?

As a geek I’m guilty of perhaps not getting as much exercise as I need. Part of the problem is finding the time but that comes down to motivation. With the wonders of this socially networked age it’s easier to use technology to help with that motivation.
The geek in me likes stats. If I know I’m doing good, and overall improving against myself or friends then I have the incentive to keep going and doing better. You can do something simple like maintaining an excel spreadsheet or twittering your workout but as someone who’s recently rediscovered cycling after 20 years in cars I’m really blown away by SportsDo. All you need is a Windows Mobile device with GPS capabilities, a data connection and … to get off the computer and get some exercise!
Your first step is to register on the SportsDo.Net website and create a profile. From there you can download and install the Windows Mobile client (other devices are supported) or you can visit their over-the-air provisioning site directly from your phone (you can try out the application before buying – you’re just limited to the distance you can cover).
Your life on the go

Lifecasting is a big thing at the moment. One step beyond blogging and tweeting is the ability to record and broadcast live video from a cellphone to share what you’re doing – and engage with your audience.
Qik is probably the best known of these, and is slowly rolling out an early beta service for Windows Mobile users. But Qik are not the only game in town – there are a couple of existing solutions that have great support for Windows Mobile users.
LiveCast provide a live video streaming platform for Windows Mobile and laptop or UMPC users. The video is synchronized with GPS position data so your viewers can see where you are when you’re broadcasting (or when they review archived footage where you were).
While the video quality on LiveCast (formerly known as PocketCaster from ComVu) is pretty good for high end phones the client is not the most intuitive (so expect to spend some time figuring it it), and the web site is a bit clunky. [Read more]
Free GPS navigation for your device!
I caught this item on The Red Ferret Journal and thought it was a pretty cool item that you may like. Nav4All is a free gps navigation for your mobile phone! Yeah … FREE!! Available in 55 languages and is compatible with most handsets.
So will it be free forever? Maybe not but at least for the next couple of years it will be so I think it is worth looking at. What is huge (I think) is the ability to have access to maps all over the world … great if you are on that once in a lifetime trip!

$100 Price Cut on Dash Express…
Posted by Chris Leckness on 06/22/08 in GPS, Steals & Deals
That’s an impressive price cut guys. If you were on the fence deciding if you wanted to buy one of these, this is the sign.
Dash Navigation today announced a $100 price drop for its Dash Express portable navigation system. You can now get the Internet-connected GPS for $299 rather than $399, though you will still have to pay for the Dash Express service after the three-month complimentary period is up ($9.99 a month with a two-year plan to $12.99 per month for month-to-month).

Google Maps 2.2 Mobile For BlackBerry’s Only? C’mon!
Posted by Doug Smith on 06/10/08 in GPS, Software
Okay, now I’m mad! Google, what are you thinking?? Come up with some awesome new features for Google Maps 2.2 for Mobile and it only works on BlackBerry’s or Java enabled devices? Joe Hughes over at Google Mobile Blog says:
This version of Google Maps for mobile also includes a bunch of other goodies, like faster searching on BlackBerry devices and star ratings for businesses. It’s currently available for BlackBerry devices and many other Java-based phones. To download it to your phone visit http://www.google.com/gmm from your phone’s web browser or on the desktop.
Here are some other cool features of Google Maps 2.2:
Enter the new version of Google Maps for mobile. This version (2.2) allows you to get transit directions in all the same places as the web version of Google Maps, including Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Vancouver, and over 40 other cities in North America.
This version of Google Maps for mobile even has a few tricks not yet available on the desktop version of Google Maps. For instance, you can find the last transit trips of the day (to figure out how late you can stay at the party) and more easily browse through earlier or later trips. The My Location feature, available on most phones, also makes it easier to set the start point of your journey.
I’m personally loving this rivalry between Google Maps and Windows Live Search! Because there is always one sure winner, US! They keep coming out with better software all the time. And the upside is that it is all FREE!!!
Check out the Video after the break!
We’ll keep you updated on when Google Maps 2.2 for Pocket PC enabled devices is released. For now enjoy the video and the photo above I have label Google on Crack! Enjoy!
