HTC Max 4G - My Dream device…

A new device was announced by HTC and it passed right under our noses… the HTC Max 4G, the first WiMax phone. Recently announced by HTC and it is expected to be released in late November… only … it will be in … Russia! under the Yota carrier. htcmax4g-3

This dream device sports 4G connectivity to a WiMax service that will provide blazingly fast data connection. It will also include the usual connections for all those aging GSM/GPRS/EDGE carriers out there… The screen is a beautiful WVGA 480 x 800 pixels, 3.8 inches diagonal that we all love from the HTC Touch HD, TouchFLO 3D, accelerometers for auto rotate, proximity for screen auto-turn off (which can heavily extend power management), 288Mb RAM, 256Mb ROM and a whopping 8Gb user available internal storage memory plus the corresponding extension slot for microSDHC.

Qik Review

qikwindowsmobile

Speaking of Lifecasting, (see Offbeatmammal’s post)… I have been reviewing an alpha version of Qik’s mobile streaming video service, for Windows Mobile 6. I have been using it for a week or two now and I have good things to report. In order to mix it up a bit, I plan on streaming my review live, using Qik, this Wednesday July 2nd at 2:00 pm EST. I will stream it from this url. We’ll see what happens.

Your life on the go

Lifecasting is a big thing at the moment. One step beyond blogging and tweeting is the ability to record and broadcast live video from a cellphone to share what you’re doing – and engage with your audience.

Qik is probably the best known of these, and is slowly rolling out an early beta service for Windows Mobile users. But Qik are not the only game in town – there are a couple of existing solutions that have great support for Windows Mobile users.

LiveCast LiveCast provide a live video streaming platform for Windows Mobile and laptop or UMPC users. The video is synchronized with GPS position data so your viewers can see where you are when you’re broadcasting (or when they review archived footage where you were).

While the video quality on LiveCast (formerly known as PocketCaster from ComVu) is pretty good for high end phones the client is not the most intuitive (so expect to spend some time figuring it it), and the web site is a bit clunky. [Read more]

Skype v4 is Calling

skype-group-screen-560x318 I have been involved in voice and video communication on the PC for a long, long time..back to the original Internet Phone technology in the 90s. I have been involved professionally with several of the early innovators in the space, and today I would say VoIP is one of my most commonly used technologies. I use it for at least three quarters of my overall daily communication, and all of it from work.

That being said, I am extremely excited by the release of the beta for Skype v4, which is supposed to start rolling out sometime today/tomorrow NOW. Skype is a great program and one which I find more or less indispensable both professionally and personally..and v4 sounds like it is going to be a useful, gutsy release for the company. The new version seems to be a major step forward for Skype, but technically and philosophically.

In a nutshell, the core Skype software, which was created for the voice dominated environment of a couple years back, is being retooled to focus on video and video/voice/text integration which are the key ingredients of today’s online communication landscape.

Original (possibly boring, yet somehow intriguing) Content

truckcam_1It sounds like the url for a really bad porn site… truckbuddy.camstreams.com

Oooofff! You wince just saying it, however this gentleman has an unusual and somehow intriguing concept for logging his life, in real-time with a webcam. truckbuddy is, as you may have guessed, an 18 wheel truck driver, and has put together a somewhat tech-savvy setup in his truck:

THE SET UP
a web cam
The aircard is a Sierra AC580.
The router is a D-Link DIR-450.
It’s a sweet geek setup.

So he broadcasts wherever he is in the USA live, 24 hours a day, unless he drives thru an area with no reception for his broadband card.
