Best of 2007 - Top 5 Windows Mobile Phones

I made my picks for the best Mobile Phones of 2007, now for the bread and butter list. The list that we care about, the Windows Mobile List.

5. T-Mobile Shadow - Very cool custom UI for this one.

4. HTC Mogul - Heavy hitter, work horse style Pocket PC Phone.

3. T-Mobile Dash - Sexy, lightweight, and super powerful.

2. Samsung BlackJack II - Improving on the few shortcomings of the BlackJack I, the BlackJack II is an awesome phone.

1. AT&T Tilt - Need I say more. It’s got everything.

I have to admit, my list heavily favors touch screen devices. The year brought some great phones from the Windows Mobile camp as well as some serious contenders from others like Apple and Nokia. Moving to 2008, I hope to see a lot more cool devices. I think that Android, Nokia, and even Apple might have done enough to push Microsoft forward a little.

Best of 2007 - Media Players

archos-605-pmp-aug The category of Media Players is almost to broad to fairly throw them all in the same list, but we’ll do it anyhow. The best Hard Drive based players would definately be the iPod Classic 80 and the Zune 80. The best Movie Player has got to be the Archos 605. By far the best flash based player is the Samsung YP-2P. There are a ton of great flash players out there, not just the nano. Creative Zen flash players are really nice and Sony has burst on that scene with some really solid players too. Since the iPhone is really more of a phone than a Media Player, I am going to leave it off this list, but one of its brothers made it!

5. iPod Classic 80 - Lots of storage, the ability to use it as an external hard drive, the trusted name… You can’t really go wrong with the Classic 80.

4. Samsung YP-2P - This is a very innovative flash player. It has a sexy touch screen navigation method as well as Stereo Bluetooth support.

3. Archos 605 - WiFi, 160GB Hard drive, gorgeous screen. Any questions?

2. Microsoft Zune 80 - I don’t really have to explain this one. The 2nd coming of the Zune is a bit better than the 1st. Huge screen and 80 GB capacity. I have used the Zune 80 and the iPod Classic 80 for a while now and I really think they are a toss up at this point. There are thing that I like better on the Zune that push this one on up the list.

1. iPod Touch - An iPhone without the phone. This one comes in 8gb or 16gb varieties. It’s quite pricey, but well worth it. It’s doing something already, that I hope to see other companies follow suit with, you can shop in the music store without being tied down to a computer.

My formula for these rankings are a combination of features, price, and popularity.

Honorable Mentions : iRiver Clix 2nd Gen, iPod Nano Fatty, Zune Gen 2 Flash Players, and Creative Zen.

Best of 2007 - Top 5 Mobile Phones

iphone_34 Here is my list of the Best Mobile Phones of 2007. This list covers more than Windows Mobile Phones. The Top 5 Windows Mobile Phones of 2007 will come later.

5. Palm Centro (Sprint) - I know. What is he smoking? Right? No. The Palm Centro made it into my list because of its appeal to a mass market, it’s price point, and face it… it’s a really nice smaller phone packed with features. My wife is waiting on this one to hit the GSM side of the cell world.

4. The Nokia N95 (unlocked) - This is an AMAZING device. I don’t care for Symbian, but the navigation is simple to pick up if you have never used before. The 5 MegaPixel camera is one of the best cameras to ever come in a phone. The Nokia N95 does it all. (link)

3. Blackberry Curve (Various Carriers) - Take the uber business email platform and throw the short, fat “old school” Blackberries out the window and add some handsets with mass appeal and you have an instant hit. Ask them, it worked for RIM. I personally prefer and Exchange Server, but for folks that work for companies that already have this solution in place, it’s nice to know that there are attractive phones for you.

2. The AT&T Tilt (AT&T) - This is the best bang for your buck in the Windows Mobile Arena. Well, it’s not the cheapest phone by far but it has so many features packed into one device. (link)

1. The Apple iPhone (AT&T) - Despite it’s shortcomings as a business phone, the iPhone is no doubt “the” phone of 2007. I used this phone a few times since it came out and it truely is a joy to use. I don’t have to harp on the 3 things I don’t like about the iPhone since one of them is fixed and the other two will be in 2008. (link)

Honorable Mentions : T-Mobile Dash, LG Chocolate, and Treo 750.

There you have it. These are my picks for the Top 5 Mobile Phones of 2007. Stay tuned for other lists including a Top 5 UMPC List from Ctitanic!
