Nokia Releases the N96

The flagship of Nokia’s devices has just been released in Europe and it is looking mighty fine although fineness comes with a hefty price tag (about $800 US). 40 Hours of video, 16GB of internal memory that can be increased to 24GB and an advanced music offering top this device for features. We have not heard anything on the US launch but I would expect we will see it soon. Below is the text of the press release.

Nokia announced the availability of the much anticipated Nokia N96, its flagship multimedia computer in the iconic Nokia Nseries range. It boasts live TV, 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, turn-by-turn voice navigation, 16GB of internal memory that can be increased to 24GB with an optional microSD card, superior sound and music, N-Gage gaming and a stunning 2.8″ display. Nokia + Zune?? Hmmm….

So how cool would this be? I like Nokia products and I like my Zune … imagine combining the two. Hmmm, very interesting!

Nokia is currently working with the Zune team on integration of Zune Marketplace content according to a well placed source within Microsoft. The joint development is directed at content delivery rather than a hardware device according to the source. It has long been assumed by many tech followers that Zune content and software would find it’s way onto Windows Mobile devices, thereby offering competition to the unfortunately popular iPhone. The interesting thing about the Nokia Zune partnership is that Nokia does not support Windows Mobile. It appears Microsoft may be developing a two front war against the iPhone, namely Windows based smart phones and more abundant “non-smart” phones.

This new Nseries flagship model will offer a TV tuner, 3G speeds, 16GB memory, 5-megapixel camera, AGPS and whole lot of excitement! Drool at the picture below and check out that slick stand enabling you to easily prop your device to catch a video. I like it!

Last week I posted an introduction to the N78 and now it is available for folks in the US. I said it then and after another week of having it, I still like it … a lot! If you did not see the unboxing video you might want to check it out. I give a quick look at the mapping and music capabilities.

Nokia to acquire Symbian Limited

Visionary move embraces openness and accelerates innovation

Nokia announced it has launched a cash offer to acquire all of the shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own, at a price of EUR 3.647 per share. The net cash outlay from Nokia to purchase the approximately 52% of Symbian Limited shares it does not already own will be approximately EUR 264 million.

Nokia has received irrevocable undertakings from Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ), Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd. and Siemens International Holding BV to accept the offer, representing approximately 91% of the Symbian shares subject to the offer. Nokia also expects Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. to accept the offer.

The acquisition is a fundamental step in the establishment of the Symbian Foundation, announced today by Nokia, together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, NTT DOCOMO, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone. Mobile leaders to unify the Symbian software platform

Foundation to be established to provide royalty-free open platform and accelerate innovation

Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation to extend the appeal of this unified software platform. Membership of this non-profit Foundation will be open to all organizations. This initiative is supported by current shareholders and management of Symbian Limited, who have been actively involved in its development. Plans for the Foundation have already received wide support from other industry leaders.

To enable the Foundation, Nokia today announced plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own and then contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola today announced their intention to contribute technology from UIQ and DOCOMO has also indicated its willingness to contribute its MOAP(S) assets. From these contributions, the Foundation will provide a unified platform with common UI framework. A full platform will be available for all Foundation members under a royalty-free license, from the Foundation’s first day of operations.

An unboxing and first impressions of the Nokia N78

I received the Nokia N78 the other day and have been playing around with this new entry from Nokia. I have to tell you, I like it! The unboxing video below just shows what I saw the day it arrived and I give a quick look at the mapping and music capabilities. I apologize in advance for the errant sound that occurs in the video when ever the device is actively on the network. For what ever reason my video camera picks up the sound that is normally unintelligible to the human ear. In fact there was a sizable portion of the video I deleted because the sound was just too much.

Nokia always gives a first class introduction to their devices as you open the box for the first time. You always have a to take a second to look before you remove it from the box.

Updates include enhanced pedestrian navigation, new satellite images and support for integrated compass orientation

Nokia today announced that its highly anticipated update for Nokia Maps has left beta stage and is now ready for consumers to download.

Downloaded over 240,000 times since announced in February, Nokia Maps 2.0 has improved its optional Car Navigation, enhanced its pedestrian navigation, added multimedia city guides, now offers satellite images, and is sporting a redesigned user interface. Nokia’s mapping and navigation solutions give people navigation features, local content and world maps directly on their mobile device, in a way that only connected devices can.
