HTC Touch Pro Arrives at Verizon
Posted by Jack Cook on 11/24/08 in Verizon Wireless
Decisions … Decisions … Decisions
I’ve pretty much decided on what my next device will be and the question now is where do I want to get my service from. Now that Verizon has added the Touch Pro to it stable of devices, the decision has become harder. Having the performance and functionality of a device with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional coupled with the a slide–out QWERTY keyboard, a 5–way navigation key and the extras that HTC adds with the Touch Flo interface, this is pretty much as close to a perfect device for my needs.
Having the advantage of Wi–Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, the ability to tether as well as enjoy my music and videos along with the myriad of “must have” applications I use everyday will be thoroughly enjoyed with the Touch Pro and with the strong Verizon network …. this could be the one!

Skyfire - You need to try it
A month ago, Chris posted that Skyfire (was) Open to Everyone but it had a short window of opportunity but NOW it is open again for everyone. If you have not tried Skyfire yet, you need to do so. Simply put, it is an amazing experience. I was fortunate to get in on the early beta program in the beginning of the year and have been truly amazed with the experience. Now you too can try it because Skyfire is giving Windows Mobile smartphone users everywhere an opportunity to take the latest beta version and test it out.
Skyfire is free and it will allow you to experience the internet like you do on your PC. Imagine, you can have the same experience on your mobile phone that you have at home … how cool is that? It’s “The Web”, not some mobile web.
The 0.8 beta of Skyfire is now available for smartphones running Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0 and you folks that run Symbian don’t worry, your version for Series 60 phones is coming very soon!

A Cool File Explorer Extension
This freeware by Hou Ming is a very cool (and very small) add on for File Explorer that adds a lot of missing features that will enhance your ability to work with files on your device.
Here are some of the fantastic “must have” features it adds:
-
Resizable header for easy sorting by file name, date of last modification or size
-
Tree view of folders; you can now jump easily from a location to any other on your device in one step
-
Icon view that enables the display of files as icons similar to your desktop computer
-
Real time image preview; now you don’t have to open several files in order to send the one you desire
-
Show extension option for those who ask themselves the same question I do: “What type of file is this?
-
Open with Program allows you easily select an application to open the specific file you select (useful in case you don’t have the correct file associations or when you want Album app to open your images instead of Windows default picture viewer.
-
File property context menu for easy renaming and attribute changing
-
Open all executables with Parameters in case you need a special parameter when launching an application
-
Sending shortcut to Programs for instant shortcut creation of executables placed directly in Programs folder in Start Menu.

Youtubeplay 1.0.0.7 - FREE and Terrific!
Posted by Jack Cook on 09/6/08 in Pocket PC Phones, Software
This is one terrific YouTube player application that is very similar to the latest CorePlayer. You can search for videos in a nice friendly Windows Mobile app and then it plays the full FLV video (not miniscule MPEG4 versions) with its own player.
Because of the way it was written, you need the .net runtime, v2 or v3.5: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d…displaylang=en
The video player overlay is hacked out of TCPMP and the FLV part is based on FFMPEG.
Download Latest Version (v1.0.0.7) from here
MobileMonger
How’s your memory? Are you always concerned about what is available? Do you wonder just how it is being used? Here is a neat program that I found over at PocketNow via WMExperts that will tell you everything you need to know on how your device’s memory is being used in a graphical format that is very clear.
From the author:
I recently got a HTC Diamond device and have been very happy with it. One of the first things I did was load it up with all sorts of applications. Even though the device has a 4GB Internal Storage card, if you are not careful about where you install things you can run out of Main Memory very fast.
When running out of Main Memory I wondered what was using it. If you hit the link provided in the Windows Mobile memory settings screen it takes you to an explorer window that shows you all files greater than 64kb. In Windows CE 1.0 this was probably helpful, but they don’t seem to have updated it since.
The usual tool I use for this job on the PC is the last free version of Space Monger. I tried to point SpaceMonger at my phone through ActiveSync WMDC but found since its not a real redirection SpaceMonger couldn’t do it. So I wrote an equivalent for Windows Mobile - MobileMonger.
Download:
- Just the CAB - I know what what I’m doing.
- Windows Installer for ActiveSync/WMDC.
You may need .NET Compact Framework 3.5 if you don’t have it already.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 First Impressions … WOW!
Posted by Jack Cook on 06/16/08 in Pocket PC Phones, Sony Ericsson
Looks like the Boy Genius Report got their hands on the XPERIA by Sony Ericsson and their first impressions are WOW! Great specs from your local flavor of UMTS/HSDPA, to an optical joystick, to the 800×480 VGA screen, and they loved the “cool funky notification lights”!
They say they can’t wait to play with a final production unit so I guess you would have to assume that they were impressed. Are there flaws? Yup but you will just have to wait for their review to find out about them but in the meantime, check out their picture gallery by clicking on the picture above.
