Samsung Q1 Ultra Mobile with HSDPA

Do I need one? No, not really but those device envy juices are always flowing. I have looked at the Q1 since it first appeared and have come close but I just have not taken the plunge …but I just might do it. I missed this announcement that was out on Monday but saw it today on Akihabara News and thought I would pass it along for those of you that have an interest in the Q1. The US release of these two new UMPCs with HSDPA and Vista Business, the Q1U-CMXP and Q1UP-V should make a few folks that have been salivating for a cool UMPC very happy.

The Q1UP-V is equipped with a Core Solo U1500 (1.33GHz), 2GB of RAM, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and a 1.3Mpix camera. The Q1U-CMXP features almost the same specifications, but also integrates a HSDPA 3G cellular modem.

Gizmodo Is Confused but Warner figures it out

So Gizmodo is confused about the naming structure out there for UMPCs, ULCPCs, mini-notebooks, ultraportables, subnotebooks, and netbooks They just don’t understand the difference between all of them but not to worry Giz, Warner Crocker from GottaBeMobile has it all figured out. Yeah we can probably blame the marketing folks for all the names but blame does not answer the questions “what is a ULCPC?” or “what is the difference between a Subnotebook and a mini-Notebook?”

So after a serious amount of time researching the meaning of each, Warner has come up with the Crocker Concise Definition Mobile Dictionary. In his first release of this soon to be time honored classic, Warner clearly defines the Subnotebook, Ultraportable, Mini-Notebook, Ultra-Low Cost PC (ULCPC, Netbook, Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC)).

So if you want to know the meaning of each, I urge you to head over to GottaBeMobile and find out the true meaning of each and urge Warner for the quick release of Revision 2

Freedom Bluetooth Keyboard

About a year ago there were a couple of posts talking about the Freedom folding keyboards (one Bluetooth and one USB).

While the USB one seems to have come and gone the bluetooth option is alive and kicking. This is good news as other alternatives (such as the iGo Stowaway) have been discontinued so it’s good to see at least one option out there for folks who need a better experience.

While I’m happy enough to knock out a quick email reply on my smartphone it’s not easy to be as productive as I’d like when I’m away from the office. That however was nowhere near as frustrating as trying to type on the split keyboard on my Samsung Q1U which I’ve not been able to get comfortable using.

So I finally ordered a Freedom Universal Bluetooth keyboard to try it out for myself.

The literature says it’s better than a Smartphone, It’s an Intelligent Phone. Hmm… Don’t know what the hell it is, but it sure looks like a Swiss Army knife to me.

As the name ‘HDPC’ signifies, user can converge the stand-alone technologies of existing portable devices such as car PC, navigation, mobile phone, PMP, mp3, UMPC, electronic dictionary, internet phone, PSP, digital camera, voice recorder, mobile IPTV into HDPC.
The HDPC is expected to be available in July 2008, and the price would be between 400,000(KRW) and 500,000(KRW).
