Customize your Sliding Panel Home Screen

mobilejaw Here is a great tip from Mike Temporale for over at  Mobile Jaw on how to  “Customize the New Sliding Panel Home Screen on Windows Mobile 6.1″.  If you have a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard then I know you have been playing with the new sliding panel.  Mike shows you how to modify the panels and their order and if you want, you can add new panels as well.

How do you do it?  Simply edit the corresponding xml and registry settings. Mike did say that the answer may have been easy, but actually doing it can be difficult for some.  So what is the solution?

Enter CHome Configurator from mind of tlogix over at Smartphone: Nuts & Bolts. This utility will ease the pain of customizing the new sliding panel home screen to your liking. CHome Configurator allows you to add new panels, and modify or delete existing panels without having to mess around with xml files and registry settings. Best of all, this utility is FREE!

HTC Touch Dual is available but only online

So if you have had that hankering for the Touch Dual, it is available on the Best Buy website ONLY.  Too bad it is not in the stores, my guess is that there would have been a number of folks that would have liked to see it, hold it and possibly try it before they bought it.

In any event, if you want an unlocked black HTC  Touch Dual Cell Phone that will give you a pretty good Pocket PC phone experience, click the link and head over to Best Buy

Touch Dual available at Best Buy … almost

Supposedly the HTC Touch Dual will be available at Best Buy this weekend but it has not appeared as available as of Saturday morning … I guess we will just have to wait a bit longer.  In any event, this is a pretty cool device that comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 right out of the box.  The TouchFLO touch screen will make navigation easy as you read your email and browse the “net” and the slide out 16 key number pad should make that little extra difference in ease of use with one hand.

There is no question that it has been a long time coming to the US but if you have had a hankering for this baby at least you know that it will operate on our networks …. you can check it out here at Best Buy

Windows Mobile 6.1 Video

Mel Sampat from the Windows Mobile Team Blog posted a video that demos what the 6.1 experience is like.  It is a long video (40 minutes) but the features you will see are pretty cool and well worth the time.  Is everything in the demo?  No, there are a few features missing like IEMobile’s new Zoom feature and integration with SCMDM 2008 but I’m sure we will see more as time goes on.

  • Cool devices, including the T-Mobile Shadow, HTC Tilt, Pantech Duo, Moto Q9
  • The new Sliding Panel home screen (aka “Bronze”)
  • All new home screen plugins
  • Threaded SMS
  • Copy & Paste support for non-touch devices
  • New Task Manager
  • Clock & Alarms
  • Windows Live and Live Search Mobile
  • and more…
